NAP250DR or NAP200DR

Posted by: Patrick Lam on 27 October 2017

Dear folks,

I come across a dilemma that I don't know how to choose between the captioned power amp.  Well, my listening area is not large and I plan to upgrade my existing devices to NDX/555PS/NAC252/SC/NAP250DR or NAP200DR.  CDS3/XPS2 is my main source in listening music definitely.  Is there any existing users that can share the experience of the performance of NAC252 and advise if the NAP200DR is a well-balanced combination?  I understand that there is a gap between the preamp and the power amp but due to my listening area is not large enough to accommodate the NAP250DR and I am afraid that NAP250DR will produce lots of bass in my listening area.  I am currently using the Neat Petite SX as my main speakers.

Kindly advise.

Cheers,

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

The 250DR will undoubtably work well with the 252 but whether it’s the right NAP for your speakers is a different issue.  Home demo is your answer.

Lindsay

I used a 250dr with a 252 for over a year and it is a very very good combination home demo is a must though.

no the 250 DR actually is better for low volume listening as it got a much lower noise floor than a 200.

and no it doesn't produce extra bass, just what's there in the recording which the 200 has not got the bandwidth to reproduce. It's very fine at the lowest volume (I am listening to mine at the lowest as my family is sleeping)

I have no insight as to whether the 250DR is well suited to your speakers, but in my own search for the right amp, found one bit of information to be important to me. The “DR” in the 200 applies only to the power source for the preamp (e.g., 202).  It does not apply to the power signal to your speakers. In the 250, the “DR” applies to the signal to the speakers. For this reason, I exchanged my new 200DR for the 250DR, thanks to a very understanding dealer.

As for whether it produced more bass, the power difference was not overwhelming. Rather, I found that the 250 had better “grip” on sound overall including bass. It did not overpower the speakers in comparison to the 200 but the increased power made for better listening at quiet volumes in addition to loud.

The combination of 282/200 is widely acknowledged as a very good one. Add a HiCap and it's further improved. I used this for several years. A decent demo will allow you to judge for yourself.

Yes the same with my 300dr. Much tighter controlled bass than the SU I had before.

Sorry I just replied to the wrong thread - old age I'm afraid!

Maybe keep the XPS2 you already have for the NDX and with the money saved on the 555 you could get a 300DR giving you  NDX/XPS/252/SC/300DR. It isn't always about drivability between amps and speakers the 250 -2 drove my speakers quite adaquently but the 300 made them sound like better speakers.

the 250 is also a different engineering, that's when the regulated amplifier architecture starts, and improves on resolution quite a bit to my ears, also allows more consistent performance at all volume levels.

I think at 252 level, one really should upgrade to least 250DR, but 300DR is a lot better

i had a 200 non DR and loved the sound it made, so much had it for 15 years, with pre started with 202 added HC and then up graded to 282 with HCDR

I would also look at another option 300 non DR and then if happy DR 300, which is where I am my source is NDX and works really well with 282/HCDR/300

if you can demo I spent nearly a day at my dealer with different options and then chosse the best combo for you and speaker set up 282/252 are quiet different
