Physical Positioning of NAS

Posted by: JohnA on 28 October 2017

My router is in a different room and about 15 metres away from my NDX. My NAS (ReadyNAS102) is connected to the router via a Netgear GS108 switch and both are located close to the router. The NDX and router are connected to each other and to the Internet via Powerline Homeplugs. My question is whether moving the NAS and adding another switch close to the NDX would reduce the possible impact of mains disturbance or does the stream from the NAS travel to the router and then to the NDX so that the NAS would then in effect be 30 metres from the NDX so best to leave it where it is?

One more Seakayaker,  the LED activity all means something.

Left LED:    No LED (off)  - no link, port shutdown.    Solid Yellow - Link OK.       Flashing Yellow – Link Active

Right LED   No LED (off)  - Connected @ 10/100Mbs     On  - Connected @ 1000Mbs

If LED colour is Orange, either solid or flashing,  it means a problem of some sort - too many variables to get into here.

LEDs don’t generate RF.....

.....but think of the inky blackness you'd get if you turned off the offending switch!

.....   indeed,  but they do generate VFI.  Small cabinets or in another room are good for VFI suppression
