Hi,

As topic, LAN and BNC S/PDIF, which one you like on the sound presentation ?

Cheers,

Which do you like, which is surely the key question?

Bnc with DC1 cable.

i have the serve but have tried also the core: at the beginning i preferred the bnc mode. But now, with optimized network and good quality lan cables, i definitely prefer the upnp mode, by a good margin.

Interesting question! I do not have a Core but I guess the answer might also depend on the device you connect the Core to? Given that Naim promotes the Core primarily as a ripping station and a UPnP server, perhaps its SPDIF output is not top notch. But who knows, perhaps it is very good! Do you have a Core? Which output do you like better?

Feeding what, in both cases?

I am pending to buy the core for replace my synology NAS, so I have interest to open this thread to discuss.

A Core is primarily a CD ripper, I assume you have already ripped all your CD's,  so why buy a CD ripper  ???

However, if used via the SPDIF output the Core is also a combined music store and renderer, possibly a rival for Melco etc, needing no files streaming across a network. Interesting to know how well it performs in this mode.

Yes I understand that IB,  I was just asking why replace a NAS with a Core (assuming the intent is to use it as a music store only)

I see what you mean. Maybe it is to decide if the rendering approach is better - though there is the other potential variable of any difference between the Synology and Core serving via the network.

The core if used via spdif has to be played via the uniti Core app and cannot be selected as a server from say the Nova, Atom or Star App as a server. I mention this as you will then lose Album cover art work and then just show the digital input on the screen.

For me I have tried both BNC spdif and Upnp and find it depends more on my mood and what I am playing, still a bit confused, though I have a cheap blue jeans cable?

Hi Mike-B,

Are you not agree the core better than the normal NAS on the music presentation ?

Hi Gazza,

Could you kindly explain the different on the BNC SPDIF and UPnP on music presentation ?

What LAN cable are you using right now ?

Cheers,

I don't believe that has been proven yet other than speculation,  I have yet to hear or read a serious A/B comparison.     I listened to a UnitiServe vs a Synology & it convinced me the sound was slightly better from the Synology,  the same opinion from one or two other forum members.    And reading of the teething problems on the forum & other places,  its not for me even if I had a CD collection to rip.

As part of assessing the SPDIF connection did you try various quality cables on that as well?

which streamer or dac do you use?    the other point also, as mentioned before: if you have already ripped all your cd,  the difference between nas and core are very minimal.  You can also add a linear ps to your nas, if it is possible, and it will increase the sound quality.

I am using NDX and I already add the linear ps to my NAS.

It seemed a bit hit and miss, some times I thought the Spdif was punchier, more forceful presentation, then on other occaisions it seemed pretty much the same. I have so far not come to a conclusion, other than to borrow a Naim dc1 from my dealer at some point. I am still not convinced that it may be my mood, per my previous post. At all times it as back to back listening

Ethernet cable is Melco audiophile ethernet.

I prefer the sound of my hdx cos my core is in its box.
