LP12 / Linn Ittok LV11

Posted by: Zook on 02 November 2017

I know it's a Linn, but many of us have one of these in our setup.  So just a query.

I have a Linn Ittok LV11 fitted to my LP12, when I line it up to lower itself onto the vinyl, once released it runs off on its descent, as opposed to gently settling in a straight downward descent, (if allowed to go full full travel would go outside of the disc, so roughly 3 - 5mm throughout its travel). I have to line it up to compensate for this and watch it all the way down.

It's is otherwise working awesome with no issues.

Has anyone else come across this and what adjustments can be made to eliminate this?

Cheers...

Where can I find this bud?

It sounds as though the bias knob needs servicing, assuming that you have set the bias correctly to match the tracking weight.

Reet, just had a bit of play around. It was on 1.5, moved it to nearer 3, seems to be more of a positive descent now.

Cheers as always dudes..!

Sounds just like mine.  They all do that, to some degree. Despite the LV11 costing a lot, in the day (£253 in 1982...!), its cuing device was pretty poor - IMO.

The bias setting should ideally be set the same as the tracking weight if all is working as it should be. I seem to recall that there was a recall of Ekos Mk1 arms for an incorrect bias setting issue. Is the cueing support platform (which makes contact with the arm tube on its descent and rise) horizontal?

Consult a seasoned fettler of the Skottish spinner if in doubt.

Cueing Platform is horizontal. I have however just been observing it, there is a possibility that the angle of the arm is slightly out.

My reasoning is that the 'Pin' that pops up to lift the platform when the raise lever is lifted, (just next to the cueing platform), has a screw which seems to locate very close to the arm when the needle is lined up with the edge of a 12", i.e. - the start. I think the arm is riding over the head of this screw slightly at the end of its travel.

I may be wrong here, but if the angle was shifted slightly counter-clockwise it would line up clear of this Screw, the only loss being at the end of a record, hence no loss...?

Any thoughts on this.

History is my father has had this for over 40 years, then gave it to me, he had the arm and cartridge fitted a while back. It works spot on, but I'm an engineer, so it's niggling lol.

Have you found Peter Swaine’s guide to “LP12 setup” ? (google it). Not sure I’ve spelt Swaine right by way.

I would find a good dealer and ask them to have a look and perhaps a service at the same time. If cash is a problem learn to cue manually.

I just cue mine manually - I find that more precise than using the arm lift, which is only useful for lifting the arm off, as the name suggests...

Cheers for the replies fellas, no problems either way Stu, it's more a niggle than a serious issue. I quite often cue it manually, but my professional nature requires things to be right lol...!

Think it's the future Pev...!
