Watched the Godfather part 2 the other night and had'n seen it for years - really enjoyed the classy acting and the scene when the senator tells Micheal that he despises him and his whole F***ing Family !.......what a way to talk to Micheal - What balls !
Really loved the Sopranos when that was on and Peaky Blinders has just started series 3.
Layer cake was classy

To mention a couple.
Not so hot on the American side of the fence, although the new one with Ben affleck Live by Night'. Set in prohibition 20s looks promising.
Prefer the more English cockney gangster movies. Really need to watch The Long Good Friday again.
Also really like the Japanese and Chinese gangster movies.
Shanghai Triad is especially worth watching.
TJ, the recent Arrow Films restoration blu-ray issue of The Long Good Friday is a must.
A more recent and fairly low key 'gangster' film that I have really enjoyed is The Drop starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and James Gandolfini.
Gangster No.1 is one of my favs.
The only gangster movie in my, admittedly very small collection, is Millers Crossing, which makes it my choice by default.
Goodfellas and Once Upon a Time in America are great films. The Sopranos though is unbeatable. Agree with Richard about The Drop as well - worth watching.
Crime Story
Set in the early 1960s, the series depicted two men — Lt. Mike Torello (Dennis Farina) and mobster Ray Luca (Anthony Denison) — with an obsessive drive to destroy each other. As Luca started with street crime in Chicago, was "made" in the Chicago Outfit and then sent to Las Vegas to monitor their casinos, Torello pursued Luca as head of a special Organized Crime Strike Force. Torello, his friend Ted Kehoe, and Luca had grown up in Chicago's "The Patch" (Smith Park) neighborhood, also called "Little Italy" or "Little Sicily" and the haunt of the Forty-Two Gang.
Complete with platefuls of pasta, scores of classic cars, and one of the best decades for fabulous music : )

Those are my top two gangster films as well.
I'd add "The Road To Perdition", possibly Paul Newman's best performance as a supporting actor. Speaking of Newman "The Sting" merits listing here.
Also worth mentioning "A Bronx Tale" as a great gangster movie that tends to fly under the radar.
A spoof mash up of the cockney gangster genre. Worth a mention as it's as equally genius as it is moronic.
Big Fat Gypsy Gangster.
Features " Mo Harris" who was once in the Eastenders soap. Hearing her shout "ere, what the fxxks goin on", rather than the more tame "ere, what's goin on" that was usually heard on Eastenders, is very satisfying.
Ah! Here’s a thread I can relate to Tabby! Favorite gangster movies? Eh, what about Monday? Tuesday was OK, but a bit of a letdown after Monday. But Wednesday, now that was good, we left the gun and took the cannoli that day. Thursday was alright and Friday I was makin meatballs, but Saturday was pretty good. Sunday was church so not so hot, you know? I’d say Wednesday was my favorite.
The other guys have some good stuff too. Goodfellas maybe? My kind of fellas, those guys.

That's a great movie.
My favorite movie is Zulu .. I'm sure there's a gangster in there somewhere .. Front rank fire !! Middle rank fire !! ..
I'm going to move this over to the HT room. It could probably do with this kind of thread...
What isn't a great gangster movie in Scarface. It's fundamentally a terrible movie, saved only by a brilliant and iconic performance from a young Pacino.
Casino
Not strictly a gangster film but deserves a mention as a crime thriller - The Onion Field amongst others James Woods in his prime.
Gangster connections - Thief - James Caan with none other than Willie Nelson and music by Tangerine Dream and if you haven't then watch it great movie
Can't believe Mean Streets hasn't got a mention a young De Niro as Johnny Boy a Scorsese & Mardik Martin and Harvey Keitel and amongst a great sound track Jumping Jack Flash.

I knew there was another one I couldn't quite remember! Another very good gangster movie. Saw Mean Streets for the first time recently - enjoyed it although it seems a bit dated now.

Much better than its American clone (The Departed).
I'm a fan of the Guy Richie movies in this field i.e. Lock, Stock..; Snatch; Layer Cake; RocknRoller.
Jean-Pierre Melville classic French gangster movie - Bob Le Flambeur.
Not quite the same perhaps but...

I think it has aged badly. I watched it a few years back, and found it difficult going.
Hard to beat this brilliant 1953 picture by the great Fritz Lang - superb performance from a young Lee Marvin too:
