Gene Hackman deservedly won an Oscar for his turn as the relentless cop "Popeye" Doyle in this 1971 William Friedkind classic:

Hard to beat this brilliant 1953 picture by the great Fritz Lang - superb performance from a young Lee Marvin too:
Reminds me that Marvin was good in Point Blank too.

Pacino must be the best gangster since Edward G and Cagney. In this fabulous film he's paired with Sean Penn, who's brilliant:

Do these two movies (the third is no great shakes) count as a gangster film? If so, this pair, taken together, may well be the finest gangster picture ever made:

What isn't a great gangster movie in Scarface. It's fundamentally a terrible movie, saved only by a brilliant and iconic performance from a young Pacino.
Rubbish!

The 1932 original (upon which De Palma's 1983 movie is loosely based) is a splendid film too:

Possibly perfect - Goodfellas
Probably too much fun - Get Shorty
Grimly British - Get Carter
Gentlemen ‘Gangsters’ - League of Gentlemen
Underlying Gangster - Performance
Gangster France - touche pas au grisbi

Loved your comments on Get Carter Adam.
Grimly British.
The scene with the Majorettes going past the house and the coal conveyer belt at the end always sticks in my mind.

Truly disturbing reflection of real lives.

My faves:
Godfather I & II
Goodfellas
Donnie Brasco
And I also like the Guy Ritchie films Snatch & Lock, Stock, etc.
My votes for the 2 worst gangster movie:
Godfather III (wtf was Pacino thinking; did he ever read the script?)...positively as brutal as the first 2 were great.

Mesrine (2008 - ) - Parts 1 & 2.
French bank robber, killer and thoroughgoing mauvais oeuf.
A Prophet (2009) -
General criminality and surviving oppression in prison.
