HDX, NS01, U/serve to Core... how easy is it to move all your stuff?

Posted by: rjstaines on 06 November 2017

I have an NS01, it replaced a fullup HDX a while ago.  I just ordered a Core, but suddenly realised I don't have a clue how easy it will be to move my ripped CDs from the NS01 to the Core !

There being no way on God's green earth that I'm going to re-rip the thousands of CDs that I (or in fact SWMBO) originally transferred from disk to HDX; if the move to a Core from the NS01 isn't a simple process, I'm going to have to cancel my Core order.

Help??  (anyone done it already?)

Richard,

i have a core and transferred all my music from my HDX. Not a problem, the core looks for music on your network. You select the drive and it all moves over easily. Only issue is the time it takes to copy across the files. I have over 17,000 albums and it took over a week to copy over

That's about 1.7 albums per minute. Not fast but also not terribly bad considering that the HDX is a relatively old design.

Do you have your music on a (backup) NAS? If so, you have the option to use that as an external drive for the Core to serve from. If you want to add an internal drive to the Core too, maybe you could use that for new CD rips.

No Chris, all of my ripped CDs are in the Music Store on the NS01 in WAV  (most of them copied there from my old HDX).  So I'm assuming the metadata is stored separately in an index file on the NS01, out of sight to us mere mortals (customers) ?

The import into the Core from your NS01 should be straightforward, if slow as mentioned above, and should handle the metadata fine.

best

If you follow the instructions in the Support section of the Core web page, you should be able to import your CD rips into a music store on the Core, which means the metadata should remain intact:

https://www.naimaudio.com/product/uniti-core

This explains how to import from other Naim devices, and mentions the HDX and US, so presumably it can import from the NS01 too, but there is no mention of this, so maybe worth checking with Naim - especially if you have no backup

Good luck!

Just curious, why did you switch out the HDX for a (similar) NS01?
