A Fistful of Brain Teasers

A Fistful of Brain Teasers

For those who are either non-British, or under the age of 65………. The UK used to have a brilliant system of currency referred to as “Pounds, Shillings and Pence”. Simplified to £ ״ s ״ d. No! Don’t ask me why the “Pence” symbol is a “d”, just learn it and remember it !

A £ comprised 20 Shillings and a Shilling comprised 12 Pence. Thus a £ comprised 240 Pence. I reckon that both Microsoft and Apple would have difficulty with these numbers in their spreadsheets, more so if we included Guineas, Crowns, Half-Crowns and Florins. However, I digress..............

The purpose of the explanation is to assist with the first two or three teasers that follow. So just to ensure a reasonable comprehension has been grasped…. ….. if each of three children has £3 − 7s − 9d, then collectively they have £10 − 3s − 3d   Got the idea ? Good ! Just try 5 children, two each with £4 − 15s − 8d and three each with £3 − 3s −  4d. How much do they have between them ? (this isn’t the first brain teaser, just the basic introduction with some “homework”, the Teasers follow)

Sorry, I'll stop doing them so quickly, I'm writing a process document and need a diversion to give me mind space to get my thoughts straight, so this is great for me, but I'll not write up the next set.

ALL these sums DO work. But obviously there is a "code" or a "trick" involved.

So again, not your straightforward goemetry or physics...........(oh how easy those were !)

FIVE x EIGHT = FIVE

SIX - SEVEN = FIVE

FIVE + NINE = SEVEN

So, what is the "code" or "trick" ?

A cup of olive oil is added to a three cup mixture composed of two fifths salad dressing (vinegar !) and three fifths olive oil. What percentage of the four cup mixture is olive oil ?

BTW, your answer will only be accepted if you did this one in your head……

Cheers

Don

70%, by volume assuming the proportions of vinegar and olive oil in the 3 cups was also by volume, and assuming no solubility of olive oil in vinegar or vice versa.

Nicely done IB............(assuming you did it in your head as per the instructions...... )

Do the following bits of arithmetic and let me know what you think :-

2 + (1 x 9) = ?

3 + (12 x 9) = ?

4 + (123 x 9) = ?

5 + 91234 x 9) = ?

6 + etc

Of course in head (as are a fair proportion of my calcs) - though this one was particularly easy.

Neat (though 1 assumed a keying error putting 9 in place of an opening bracket on 5, the substitution also giving away that you’re using a computer not iThing.

I use a mixture of PC (ThinkPad) and I-Pad mini.

Sometimes I pre-type in Word or Power-Point then copy and paste into the Forum. For more simple, short text, I might type straight into the Forum.

It all varies !

I have an answer, but I don't know if it’s the one you mean. Take Roman numerals that are part of a number spelt out, do the maths and build the words. So:

IV * I = IV, fIVe * eIght = fIVe

IX - V = IV, sIX - seVen = fIVe

IV + I = V, fIVe + nIne = seVen

Well done eoink.

These “code” or “trick” teasers aren’t really to my liking. You either “see” them or you don’t.

but well done !

Thanks Don, in a way I’m a bit disappointed, it’d have been lovely if that were just a coincidental pattern with a different intended answer.

Thanks for the puzzles, I enjoy them. Cheers, Eoin.

As before.....................Replace each word below with a four-letter word. Each new word works as part of a chain, with the last two letters of each word forming the first two letters of the next.

Festival

Rip

Dry

Belated but sincere thanks to ken c for the above teaser........ken didn’t incorporate the number “9” at the start of the 5 + (1234 x 9) line ! That was my error !

thanks ken.
