nac82 different varsions?

Posted by: nesa on 15 November 2017

Hi guys, I am new here around but not in Naim, or I think so...

I have opportunuity to buy a second-hand nac82 but this piece has a white back panel and there are no marks. I askd the seller about this and he has answerd me that there are a two versions of nac 82: with black back panel and white. Until now, I have never saw somthig like that, but maybe there is a reasonable explanation. What do you think?

Cheers

Shone

Shone, you say the back panel is white with no markings?  That doesn't sound right.  Can you post a picture (instruction for posting pictures in the FAQ)?

Any serial number?

The rear panel of a NAC82 should look like this:

Hi Richard, I think that doesn´t sound right too, but that sound to me very silly that I had to check. I have already had a Naim gear(282,200,FC2) but I thought maybe I don´t know all ..

The serial is 94569..

And the price is good too, but I am now sure that there is an issue with this 82

(and yes, I have a problem to post pictures, and the picture that you post it, it´s invincible to me)

I recommend that you speak to someone at Music Line.  If it's one they know then they will tell you.

I’ve found the amp, and as I can’t understand German very well it’s not clear if the price of €470 is the sale price or the latest price in an auction. If that price is the selling price, the amp is pretty certain to be dodgy. The front looks ok, the back is white, but goodness knows what’s inside it.

Ok guys, thank you all. I think that I should stay away..The seller said that he changed the power supply "2.200uF - 50V" with new one " Epcos 2.200uF - 63V". I am not familiar with this too..I am only listener..

Definitely not correct. Avoid.

The 'Two Versions' story is completely untrue. All Naim items I have ever seen have black painted rear panels. Perhaps very early items might differ (12, 22, 160, etc) - but the 82 is relatively modern. I own an 82 and its does not look like that.

There are markings on the panel. (I can see them on my monitor). The back panel has simply been painted.

Why, who knows?

Even if there was a legitimate reason for the back panel to be changed, painted or whatever,  the fact that the owner has changed the power supply (presumably in the napsc as the 82 doesn’t have a power supply itself) is sufficient reason not to buy it. There is no knowing what other modifications have been made. Even if it works and is cheap, it may actually be virtually worthless. Why do people mess around with these pieces of classic equipment; it’s such a shame.

Be careful, discussing messing about with naim equipment is not allowed.

I’m sure your post will be moderated appropriately.

Don't worry FC, I think HH's question was rhetorical...

From the picture it looks like a protective film that could be peeled off, certainly weird though.

Personally I would keep my money firmly in my pocket and ignore this 82.
