Uniti Star or Nova - can the FM/DAB module be added at later stage?
Posted by: Woj on 16 November 2017
Hi,
Does anyone konw if the DAB/FM module can be added later, after purchase? I am not sure whether I will need this currently but I would be good to know that it can be installed later if I decide to have it.
I'm not sure that I have seen an answer to this before. I should give Naim support a ring if you don't get a quick answer from someone here.

A month or so ago the answer seemed to be "Don't know".
I'm told by Naim that it "should be retrofittable by a competent dealer". However, I don't have an ETA for when it will become available.
Thanks Richard.
I was told at one of the Audio-T sessions that it will be retrofittable by the dealer and even by me - two screws I was told, but I suspect that's two screws after removing the casework coverig it.
I suspect a software update will be required to support it.

...and taking the necessary (mandatory) ESD precautions.
It may not even involve taking the case off if Naim have arranged for the unit to plug in. I recall reading someone saying that the HDMI mod can be done from the outside of the unit so Naim designers will probably have approached FM/DAB the same way.

Mind you having just had a look at a photo of the back of a Nova, they don't seem to have done the same with FM/DAB as HDMI, so case off and ESD precautions it looks like it is!

Yep, looking at the back of mine it doesn't look like just an easily removeable blanking plate, hard to tell for certain as there are a few Philips screws in that area, but doesn't look like a plate.
Retrofitting HDMI and/or DAB are quite different; just look at the back of the unit ... retrofitting a DAB/FM module certainly requires the cover to be removed.
hi, I have got response from Naim Support (thanks for the quick reply) that retrofitting the DAB/FM module DEFINITELY will be an option that can be provided by any NAIM dealer when these become available. On this basis I have ordered uniti Star which will be available for picking up on Wednesday!
Enjoy you Star, a lovely piece of Hifi

Ah, but what cable should I be using on the wrist strap to mat and mat to earthing point ?
Now for 5 pages of Super Lumina vs Chord vs that which must not be named vs .... discussion
Ah - you want silver cable with gold plating and rhodium core, the individual wires should be 15 Angstrom diameter and you need 128 of these, which need to be braided and then twisted at 2.45 turns per inch, ideally, and sheathed in polyacromatic silicone (linear, of course). Now, for the connectors at each end....
BTW you can get away with the same type of cable between wrist and mat as the cable between mat and earthing point, but to be honest that's slumming it, really

Wow, that’s quite a coincidence - I already have that. Just need to get the oxygen free unobtainium connectors attached somehow. The plutonium solder doesn’t seem to melt with my soldering iron.
You can use fusion instead apparently but warn us all before you try so we can hide under our kitchen tables.

Don’t these units have internet radio?
so what’s the point in adding a radio module?
Because there is quite a bit of content in the UK, especially sport, that is only broadcast over the air and not via web radio.. many still have less than suitable broadband access speeds, and finally because current web based radio is session based rather than multicast, therefore it tends to be quite expensive to source if requiring a quality audio experience, assuming your broadband can support it... therefore higher quality web radio is relatively limited.
Really?
i haven’t looked but I would have thought that all the most popular sport channels from around the globe would be available.
And I can’t imagine that web radio uses that much bandwidth.
