NAIM and VIBEX Power Conditioner

Posted by: uem on 17 November 2017

Dear NAIM friends,

Previously, there was a "general NAIM wisdom"    that NEVER ever a power conditioner, mains filter or so, must be connected before a NAIM device. Except, of course, the in-house power cords, the (German-built) power IGEL - which have in use currently -  etc, but just unfiltered.
In the meantime, there are better Power filters / conditioner, etc on the market – e.g such that Include a good DC filter element. It is well known that DC in particular can negatively affect the large toroidal transformers of NAIM.

Now to my question:
Who has tried VIBEX Power Filters such as the Granada / Alhambra with NAIM?
Are the NAIMs still sounding equally good - or even better?

By the way: In addition to the two NAIMs 555 and 552 (both have the DR-up-grade, BTW )  , I have active speakers from LINN in use and about 6 other pieces of Equipment connected , such as (Tube) tuners, an (Tube) analog chain, but NO actual digital devices (except the 555)

And - well: I live in a rental apartment; an extra powerline only for the HIFI is no option.

Thanks for sharing your experience & reviews

 Greeting

Urs

Actually I should say: a "dedicated spur" is no option

What would you like to acheive with a power conditioner?

A few years back I changed my 2 fairly standard power blocks for 2 Isotek blocks. I found this to be an imporovemtn over the previous blocks. then I was at 2 Ansuz demos and talked to my dealer. He had a good deal on the Ansuz MainzD block, meaning it when from being terrible expensive to just very expensive. Trading the 2 other blocks in the cost of the change was not that bad.  Ansuz has the same thinking on power, no filtering since the negatives outweigh the positives, and from these changes I agree.

Claus,

Thanks for your Info.

Do I understand correctly, that these blocks are “distributors” only - similar to the Power IGEL - without any filters ?
Which indeed would confirs the “Old” NAIM philosophy: No Filters !!  Exceptions may be a HUMBUSTER in case of strong DC disturbance

PS: I mentioned VIBEX, because they get positive reviews in some Forums; another brand with good feedback is FURMAN, BTW

You have listed two models that have two different functions:   Alhambra is a filter for EMI & RFI,   plus it has over current  & voltage protection.     The Granada is a DC filter (blocker) only.

I've not used any of the Vibex products,  but have experimented with EMI/RFI filters & found these generally have a negative effect on SQ.  l've also done the same with DC offset filters,  these are very different & I have one installed for a number years & it does have a small positive effect on my power supply.

My belief is very few if any EMI/RFI power filters do much,  maybe they are effective with poor quality mains,  but if the power supply is good,  I don't expect anything positive.   A DC filter is it will do nothing unless you do have a DC element on the power supply, then its all positive.

Thanks, Mike,

Looks  - once again  - like a case of "Trial & Error" - or maybe  success...

(if there is a dealer,  who does hand out such gear for a home-trial)
