Which voice control is better Alexa or Echo
Posted by: Janey on 22 November 2017
This is an Apple household and we have a Naim hifi in one room and a Uniti Atom in another. My other half uses the Atom much more and I was thinking of buying one of the ‘voice control’ things such as an Alexa or an Echo for his Christmas. As you can probably tell I know next to nothing about electronics except I can connect to the Naim with my iPad app. I would really appreciate opinions as to whether these latest gadgets would connect with his Atom. Many thanks.
Janey, I can't advise you here (I do t use Alexa or echo) but I have moved your post to the streaming room where you may get more response.
Are you trying to compare voice detection between the various Alexa products (Dot, Show, etc..)
I have the Echo which suggests the voice detection is better, but do not have a Dot or other experience to advise.
At the moment non connect to Naim products, well maybe streaming but not Alexa Skills.

Yes and also to know that if he tells one of these ‘things’ to play music it will come through his Atom speakers. Seems it doesn’t so perhaps it’ll be a waste of money. Thank you anyway for suggesting the Echo for day to day instructions. This is all way above my head as I hope you’ve gathered.
Neither Alexa or echo will do anything of significance for your two hifi systems directly.
Janey, there was some discussion on here when the Alexa first came out of it causing a Naim setup to get in a muddle, and I think the owner removed it. I get the impression that if all you want Alexa to do is play something from Spotify you are ok, but to get it to select a specific album from a nas and play it over the Naim is One Step Beyond. I’d stick to the App and buy him a nice jumper. At least it won’t be superseded in six months.
A slight aside, but TV adverts for Amazon ECho really annoy me, because having given the thing a name, the commands are always that, like speaking to a slave, and I believe has/will have a negative effect on politeness, already sadly lacking in society. Alexa should respond with "what's the magic word?" If the comand does not include the word 'please'.
As for controlling a music system, I have to wonder how a voice activated system will cope when playing music other than very quietly: either one would have to shout "ALEXA, FOR GOODNESS SAKE TURN IT DOWN!" (no, in this instance after the first few polite requests to please turn it down havent worked, please is no longer needed), or get up and walk over to the receiver to speak within an inch of it....

There are some preset option instead of Alexa, one is Computer !!!
Its works with Spotify via Alexa Skills, but no match for the Atom, Muso, etc..
Just realised this morning my Google Home does allow the cast and voice command, Spotify (low res) works, Deezer (HiRes) also.
Thank you all so much for your comments. I’ve decided one of these things may be a ‘damp squib’ for a techie Naim lover so think I’ll stick with a decent jumper. Really appreciate all your help.
Maybe Admin can close this thread now. I can’t find out how to do it.

Hi Janey,
My Echo dot is really good, fed into the analogue input of my Mu-So. 3.5 mm jack lead is all you need. Really excellent results and for £3.99 a month you can also get millions of tunes from Amazons music library.
I got one because my Mu-So is so rubbish on BBC radio on wi-fi and wired (Develo). I won't go int to the reasons as I will no doubt get panned again on this forum.
Go for it. We love it. Everyone who has visited our house since we got it has also bought one. Usually the next day.
No, of course it's not hi fi but its this strange thing called fun!
Just sit there and ask Alexa to play anything from Vince Hill to 60's soul. She even tells you the weather and jokes.
Kind Regards
RR

And the world would be a nicer place to get out into if people were polite, not rude!
(My point was it starts from learning at home...)

It is tempting to make reference to a program on TV last night about robots, but I shall resist because from the title and listing detail I didn't think music was on the menu.
Apparently Echo Dot is problematic if used on the same network as Naim streamers... It creates drops-out...
I am feeling a bit dim, bit surely Alexa is Echo, you can choose from a couple of names and thats two of them.

No, not here. In the early days there was a firmware update from Naim apparently to stop it getting confused with other UPnP application messages... however I never experienced that issue either... really in correct operation the two applications are unconnected.
