Unitiserve flac to wav technicals

Posted by: Chrissw19 on 25 November 2017

hello, a very technical question. I decided to try the “on the fly” conversion from flac to wav with my unitiserve. Followed the instructions from a recent post and it worked. However, when I played a 192 Flac, it looks like it is being converted to 44.1 wav (according to the app display and the streamer screen) Is the US able to transcode hi res files?

thanks ..

Screenshot_20171125-165259Yes it can [@mention:50422350651985144] - see screen shot when I play a 192/24 file, transcoded from my US from FLAC and played via my NDX.

The screen of the NDX also says 192kHz WAV.

Is their another setting in the Desktop Client that enables it to remain at 192kHz and not be downsampled? I'm away from my PC at the.moment and I can't remember which boxes I checked...

From memory I think there are a couple of transcoding options in a drop down menu on the DTC. I think it’s ‘decode’ that you want. There is certainly one that preserves the native resolution.

You are correct, had to use the decode option instead of native to keep the 192 during the conversion. Thanks for the tip!

I just fired up the PC and checked, but you sussed it already - good news!

In fact I think it was [@mention:4804681823084713] that told me how to do it a few years ago too

Great, I’m glad that’s worked. It’s odd that native doesn’t keep native resolution. But that’s the UnitiServe for you. At least my memory hasn’t completely lost it, as I sold my US over three years ago.

Chris, and of course HH

many thanks for this post. I have only had my U.S. for 6 years and had never realised this feature ! Have now set it to correctly transcode the few high res FLAC files that I have. Hardly intuitive is it !!

cheers, paul

Indeed - I think the interface was written by programmers for programmers, not for consumers. What on Earth is TRUE / FALSE anyway??? What’s wrong with ON / OFF?

Hi folks , I have been a US user for 7 years and was completely unaware of this capability I’m assuming the rational here is that you believe WAV sounds “better” ?

That is the rationale, yes. Try it and see if you think it makes a difference. Naim streamers have less work to do when they receive WAV files rather than flac. It’s something to do with the conversion to PCM, or whatever they convert to.
