Core Impressions?
Posted by: andrew jameson on 27 November 2017
I'm shortly due to have my Core installed as a replacement for the HDX as the prospect of a solid state drive and updated software appealed and cost to change wasn't that great. I'm curious if there are any viewpoints from existing Core users re. switching to the new platform / hardware ... my dealer has been hanging on for months until the Mac OS issues have been resolved. Core will be feeding NDAC/555DR btw.
Ok thanks David, that seems pretty straightforward,do we have any idea when the next update will be?...maybe I will wait until I have done that.
If you look in the Naim Uniti update thread near the top of the room, Trevor said in early November "planned December release".
So maybe in time for Christmas? (But these things run late generally.....)
best
David
The intention is before Christmas for the new release of software and firmware, according to Naim PR.
David Hendon posted:No quarter posted:Hi David,it has been a while since you rescued me and my Core, thank you for that help again.I have been enjoying all my ripped CDs,and all the music I have on a 64 GB thumb drive. However, now I think I m ready to add the rest of my music that I have on an external 1TB drive,so I have a question before I proceed. My plan is to buy a new 2 TB drive, format it to the Core while still empty, then transfer the music from my 1TB drive to the new one.Do I have to delete the 64 GB drive as a share first, before I add the 2TB drive? If I recall correctly, you are only allowed one share folder I think,is that correct?Would I do this on my PC,or with the APP?I want to have a clear plan, before I start this, just to be sure I don’t mess this up again, thanks.
Glad it's all working still.
You can have several Music shares - it's Music Stores that you can only have one of. The Music Store is where the Core saves rips made by the Core.
You should be able to take your new drive, leave it formatted as bought, transfer your music to it using your PC and then plug it into your Core. You don't need to remove the 64 GB one first unless you want to use that socket! Once it's plugged into your Core, you define the new drive as a Share (not as a Store!) using the app. It won't ask you if you want it formatting. If the Core can't see the new drive, leave it plugged in to the Core and power cycle the Core. It should show up, but this is a bit hit and miss and the next Core firmware update has a fix for that so you could wait for that.
Once you have the new drive defined as a share, the Core will automatically index the Music and present it to you on the app. It will take some time to do this. Maybe half an hour for 1 GB. You don't want or need to import the music, so don't be tempted to do that as otherwise you will hit the same problem you had last time.
i hope this helps

Hi David, just a little update...I transferred my 1.2 Terabytes of Music to the new USB hard drive I bought (3TB) last night.About an hour ago I plugged it into the back USB port of my Core, and the new music is currently “loading” into the albums list.No flashing power buttons or anything like the time I accidentally loaded it on the SSD.I have already played a few of the new albums with no problem,so I will leave things alone until the next firmware update.
Cheers Tony

Excellent post, spot on. It is the season to be merry.
Before this gets closed down, mine are
Count Arthur Strong
Bruce Forsyth
And a very "un-pc" Jimmy Savile
Hows about that then!
Just joined this forum after taking possession of my Uniti Core last weekend. My dealer kindly preloaded my Core with a selection of music which I appreciate. Reading some of the posts here and on different but similar topics, in particular those posted by David Hendon, I may need some help clarifying the metadata editing. Now I understand that CD’s ripped by my Core are stored in the Music folder while anything else is stored in the Diwnloads folder. I can see both these folders from my Mac. I get the fact that anything in the Music folder can be edited metadata-wise or even deleted via the app. I’ve done this as I used to do with my iTunes library. Renaming the album version and accurately tagging bonus tracks and so on. Where I’m getting stuck is editing metadata in the Downloads folder. Additionally I’ve discovered that some of the albums (Alan Parsons) in this folder appear to be editable via the app whilst most are not? I get the fact that none of the albums are meant to be editable from within the app and I should be doing it track by track or with the assistance of a tagging editor. I’ve tried editing one album within the Diwnloads folder. Successfully changed the album cover for one I can actually read! However the three bonus tracks I edited have now been duplicated when viewed on the app ie track listing goes ...9,10,11,12,12,13,13,14,14. Weird or what. Am I better off just deleting the album from the folder (after backing up), editing on the Mac and pasting back into the folder? Any help or best practice would be hugely appreciated.
Otherwise, pleased with the Core. I hope Naim don’t stand still re the metadata. In comparison with iTunes I would like to see a composer field and/or a comments field. For me the accuracy of the metadata is crucial to the overall ‘experience’.
