AC/DC Tagging

Posted by: Bryce Curdy on 30 November 2017

Most of my AC/DC albums are FLAC but I have a handful in MP3.  The MP3 albums (like the FLAC albums) have Artist and Album Artist set to AC/DC in Mp3tag but appear on the Naim app as AC.  To further complicate matters one MP3 album appears on the Naim app as AC/DC if I search by Album Artist but as AC if I search by Artist.  Very odd and grateful for any advice.  I know I could switch them all to ACDC and it would probably work.

I had the same problem a while back, and IIRC managed to track it down to the id3 tag version. Once I'd used mp3tag to change that to the most recent version (and rescanned), the files behaved normally in the Naim app.

Took me bloody ages to find out what the issue was, and it was really annoying me. Which in turn irritated me even more because it made me feel like a right nerd to be bothered about it, haha!

The exact versions/method escape me, but have a look at that sort of thing and hopefully you'll be able to sort it.

The trouble arises when, for example, there might be tags for recording artist, performance artist, composer, writer, etc etc, any one of which might be being picked up by the search software, but a different tag from the one you think its looking at - and different CDs or downloads might have the name assigned to a different tag, or in the case of artists' names some can have surname first, others have it last, and genre is often the worst, especially when it comes to classical music. And because of the variations it is often not a simple matter to find and fix problems, and batch tagging programs often don't seem to do it, probably for the same reason (perhaps unless you can  set it to identify and standardise every single one of all possible tags).

Getting metadata to appear right in every album and track is the bugbear of streaming, and one reason why I wish all library systems would allow simple searching and browsing by file name and file structure as well as or as an alternative to metadata - that is such a simple process to sort and also to allow for personal preferences that is very frustrating when players don't. That is one thing I miss from when I had an ND5XS on a NAS.

In those sorts of cases IB I've sometimes found it useful to strip all tags (IIRC mp3tag has a function to do so) and start again from scratch.

But (again, IIRC) that didn't work for the AC/DC file in question, as I was then just re-writing an old version tag which didn't properly support characters such as /

Hence the tag version change fixing it.

In mp3tag try selecting Extended tags (Alt + T) and make sure you have ARTIST, ALBUMARTIST and ALBUM ARTIST tags with the same value.

I don't have an ALBUM ARTIST tag.

You can add one using the Extended tags option of mp3tag. Try it, it can't hurt and may solve your issue as different UPnP servers/renderers seem to look for different versions of the "artist" tag.
