555ps & 555DR sonic presentation

I am considering DR'ing my 555ps .... in the context of using it with an NDS - would changing to a 555dr actually change the presentation and balance of the system? I'm sure I read somewhere that the change to 555dr changed the presentation - so that it sounded harder and more but more detailed......... where as the 555ps had a slightly softer presentation......... It would be great if I could get some feedback on this.......
I’ll resist the temptation to use the B word and let others who have done this respond!!
I suppose 'Core' should be the word ha ha
Actually the 555 DR is softer but adds dynamics and punch, more refined and detailed. Luxurious sound.
A big step forward for digital audio.
Sorry, I have only demoed the 555DR with my NDS so have no comparison with the 555 non DR.
I would not describe the SQ as hard with the 555DR, anything but in fact. Certainly a lot more detail compared to my current power supply but it is far more expensive so that would be expected.
The NDS is hugely revealing I have found with the addition of the 555DR. So I would expect it to reveal all the benefits of DRing your 555. The general consensus is that DRing or a DR'd 555 is well worth the premium. There are of course some (a minority I would suggest) who prefer the non DR version.
I think the NDS with a 555DR is stunning but I am not sure if that helps you with your decision.
I was one of a minority who found the 250DR harder edged than the 250.2, but obviously the DR effect on a power amp will most likely be different from its effect on a power supply.
Am I right in remembering that Simon in Suffolk was one who preferred a non-DR 555PS, albeit I think on an NDAC? Hopefully he'll see the thread and contribute, or maybe one of those @ things will be appropriate.
Had a 555DR on my 555CDP recently and would say that it definitely added more detail than the stock 555PS. I wouldn't say it sounded particularly hard or soft, music just seemed more real and more natural but with more 'edge of your seat' excitement.
i also had a 552DR as well and would say that the 555DR was a bigger 'bang for your buck' when compared with one another.
This surprised me a bit but got the same conclusions from a mate who also tried both.
I actually own both - 555PS and 555PSDR.
As far as NDS is concerned DR is the way to go - one could say it really extracts NDS’s full potential.
555PS, in my opinion, is good on slightly older generation of boxes, developed when DR technology was not yet used. Examples: CDX2, NDX.

Yes, Dave. Your recollection is correct. I too started by preferring the non-DR version on my nDAC. At the time I found the 555DRPS did too much, giving lots of detail but making the top-end a bit hard and digital and the bass was a bit forced. However, that was when my amp was 282/SC. Later, when I had 552DR and 300DR, I tried the DR version of the 555PS again and completely changed my mind. I think there is synergy when more than one DR black-box is in the system.

You may have hit the nail on the head Mike. My dealer has always advised to DR as much as possible in my system. My SuperCap, 250 and (hopefully) 555 are all DRs. I also believe there is synergy between DR amps/power supplies and SuperLumina cables. I have a SL full loom so all this combined may have resulted in the wonderful effect of introducing the 555DR in my system. That and the removal of a weak link - my previous power supply.
Still all theory though.
You could be right, Nigel. I would certainly say that there's synergy in having the full SL loom, which is just as well give the cost.
Mike
You will not disappoint with DR 555. I found that upgrade my 555PS give much darker background and music just flow.
Brilliant thank you so much for all your replies......... I think a service and upgrade is the direction I will take - sometime I the new year. I was concerned - as my system is balanced just right ......... and I did not want to upset this.........but generally the consensus here allays my concerns.
