Pop goes the 135

Posted by: davidf on 02 December 2017

had my Olive 135s fully serviced earlier this year- marvelous job Chris AV Options. Prior to service when I switched on my 135s a fairly loud pop would occur. After service a very quiet pop, hardly audible.  Why would the turn-on pop get much quieter after a full service?

it should only be a quiet pop but more importantly once on they should be left on, maybe if you’re away for a week or more then turn them off if you must

Apparently the NAP 500 switch on 'POP' [that on some occasions blow the fuse] is much reduced after a DR service.

Perhaps Chris at AV Options has developed a way of DR'ing 135s?

We should be told...

I leave them 24/7

just shut them down prior to housekeeper coming- she knows to stay away from hifi but once I came home and speaker wires moved and almost pulled out from speakers. So I shut down amps when she comes to avoid potential problems. Probably a bit ocd but that’s how I run! Still amazing how quiet the pop is now. There were times when the pop was really loud so that u might think it could damage the speakers.

your not ocd if she’s doing that so you are right to turn them off as she could blow the output transistors (I’ve been there- twice!!)

ive occasionally had loud pops but that’s normally when I’m turning off and only on the tweeter pair so I’ve ended up turning the things back on again just to check I haven’t blown them just so I can turn the amps back off again

The pop occurs because of asymmetric charging of the reservoir capacitors.  As they get older, their capacitance changes.  Sometimes this happens unevenly; hence, with time, the 'pop' can very slowly increase in loudness.

I leave my six 135s on all the time, except for when I am abroad for a week or more.

Do the 135's take a lot of power ?

Search back about a decade ago on the forum, I measured and posted the power consumptions of each of my items

Here you go:

"Linn/Armageddon -- 4.13 Watts
Hicap/Prefix -- 5.51 Watts
CDS1 at idle -- 23.66 Watts
52/PS -- 23.58 Watts
Supercap/snaxo362 -- 13.6 Watts
1 x 135 -- 12.55 Watts

So adding up my complete system (6x135s), I get to a running idling power consumption of about 150 Watts."

So, maybe, after 15 years uninterrupted connection to the A/C, I should reconsider...
