Naim And Focal at Basically Sound

Posted by: fathings cat on 03 December 2017

Popped over to see the gents at Basically Sound yesterday for their Naim event. On demonstration was the Nova and the Focal Kanta - I have to say as a combo they sounded very impressive. The Nova looked and sound very nice and the Kanta’s were particularly impressive  - wide sound  stage and lovely detail. Appreciate not all will like the looks, (yellow / blue ones have a hint of being Transformers! ) but in the flesh they looked very “70’s”  cool but colour selection will be an individual choice!

Thanks to Naim and Tony / Graham, a nice relaxed event.

Thanks

Gary

I went friday for the 3pm session -- interesting choices of music.

I know they are relatively new, but are there more people who had a chance to audition the Focal Kanta’s?

Many regards, Michel

I've had an in-store demo of the Kanta 2s a few weeks back.  I liked what I heard. Naturally they have the Focal sound. They had a nice airy top-end and I couldn't believe how low they seem to go when looking at their spec sheet. Double-bass sounded wonderful. They are an easy load and so will suit a wide range of systems. My demo was mostly on a fairly big Naim system similar to mine but at the end I heard them on the end of a one-box system and was very impressed at how they sounded.  Compared to the Focal's I've got (Electra 1028be) I felt the Kantas weren't sufficiently different/better to justify a change and if I move to different Focals it will probably be to the Sopra 2s, but I expect the Kantas to be very popular. They comfortably justified their price tag IMV.

Can vouch for Sopra 2s - wonderful speakers. Mine are black, not day-glo orange. I loved my Ovator S600s but these are in a different league. My first non British speaker though which was a little difficult to swallow at first - unlike their wine!

Same here. If you have a large room though, consider the Sopra-3 as well
