Uniti Nova - Max Volume
Posted by: Obsydian on 09 December 2017
All the Nova comes setup as did the Atom with a default setting of 85, I always assumed that was purely a limit, but today I thought I would limit it to 50 just in case (for my setup 40 is VERY loud).
However when setting max volume to 50 it actually lowered the volume (I was playing a track), so I played around upped it to 100 and same effect noticeable louder.
So is this function not a limit, but rather a gain ???
For now I set max volume to 100 but dropped my listening volume to 18 (normal setup is listening volume 22 and max volume 85), it does sound better to me, dare I say more control and sound floats even more ...
Can anyone other Nova/Atom peeps try oh and Star, be I interesting to get some views.
Will try talking to Naim to clarify also.
It would appear to be adjusting the preamp volume out, as if I take it up to 100, I then need to lower the volume. I am playing the Nova into a Nap300, so it’s not the Nova main amp being adjusted, just the preamp. Not sure why Naim come up with a setting of 85.

Interesting moreso you put a beastly 300 on the Nova.
Well I can say I sat for a 1hr session and here 3hrs later, so sounds so more involving, the control and poise sublime.
Annoyingly I had the dreaded album work missing screen, powered down and back on resolved.

It doesn't seem to work like that on the streaming-preamp That-Must-Not-Be-Named. Experimenting with changing the maximum volume on mine had no effect on music playing unless, of course, the maximum was pushed below the volume I'd set for listening.

See profile.
My point was that it looks as if, if your experience is typical, Naim have changed this behaviour with the new Uniti line. Seems odd and makes me wonder why.

PS Changing the maximum setting on my Muso Qb also doesn't change playing volume either, so I suspect, if there really is a change, it is Uniti only. Please report back on what Naim say.
I believe that the intent is to provide more discrimination in the volume control.
If setting the max to 50 (with efficient speakers) gives 100dB peak,
If the max setting is a gain setting each step on the volume control system could be 1dB.
If the max setting is a just a limit, then each step on the same volume control system could be 2dB.
Thanks Peakman understood will contact Naim.
I just believe for the Uniti it sounds better at 100 than 85 and I listen at mainly lowish levels most the time but on occasion (working from home - all out) crank it up.
Feedback from Naim was simple a max volume limiter and no more.
Have to agree, I now have a Nova and to me, sound certainly sounds better with the limit set to 100.

Good to hear.
I swapped back to 85 and upped the volume, but it just does not sound as good.
At 100 just sounds like the amp is even more in control of the speakers.
