Cannot see all albums on Naim app

Posted by: spaceryder on 12 December 2017

Hello all

New to the world of Naim and streaming. Learning fast ( -ish).

My set up is: CDs ripped on a MacBook Pro using dBpoweramp; music stored on a Synology 214j; MinimServer on NAS; MiniServer on MacBook as well ; ethernet connection to a NAIM Atom controlled by their app.

Finally got it working with advice from the MinimServer forum.

I've been ripping loads of CDs but I've found that some aren't showing on MinimServer/ Naim app. The really odd thing is that I'm missing all the albums from some groups, eg Pink Floyd but can see other groups.

On the other hand, I can't see seven out of ten albums of a Beethoven box set, for example.  All the albums show in the Synology music folder when I view it via my MacBook.

And whilst I'm at it can't get all the album covers despite the fact they're all in in their respective folders on the NAS drive.

I have rescanned from my MacBook /MinimServer and am now out of ideas.

I have posted this in the MinimServer forum as well and am awaiting replies, but was just wondering whether anybody here may be able to shed any light.

Many thanks.

I have Asset not Minim Server, but have seen this happen when the album is missing the "Album Artist" field, even though "Artist", "Artist Sort" and "Album Artist Sort" are present and correct. - it only seems to be the Naim app that's affected, browsing Asset on my PC shows the artists/albums if "Album Artist" isn't present.

Hopefully it's that simple

I'm going to show my ignorance by asking how to check the tabs/headings once the music's ripped.  I've looked under 'info' on my MacBook and the properties on 'missing' songs seem to be the same as ones already showing.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks

If you right click on the files in your computer or nas, you will get a drop down menu. One of the options is edit ID or view metadata or something like that. This is how you can then edit or check the meta using dbpoweramp.

Asset will rescan automatically, whereas you need to tell Minim to do it, using minimwatch.

You may also need to clear the image cache in the Naim app. You’ll find that under ‘other settings’.

We all get muddled over this stuff when we start, and it soon becomes second nature.

Thank you very much!  Needed to rescan on MinimServer on the NAS and not on the MacBook :-) .  Working now.

Have cleared the image cache but still can't see about 10% of the album covers.  Any ideas?

Also, I've left the settings on dBpoweramp on 'default.'  Should I change those for ease/ better results?

Thanks

Maybe a stupid question, but are you sure that the cover art is there in the first place?

If you can ‘see’ the albums but they are simply the Minim logo, it means you don’t have the art correct, and need to add it. If they have at least some metadata, they will be there somewhere.

Yup, the album covers I couldn't see were corrupted or missing!!  Thank you!

Another question if I may:

I have lots of stand alone tracks that I got from friends or downloaded years ago. There is no metadata and they come up as [no album] on MinimServer.

What's the best way to add data or even put them in a miscellaneous album/group?

Thanks

Just add it using db power amp. When you open the track you will see it is blank against artist, album, track etc. Just add what you want, and the art too. You can’t break anything, so play around.

One tip - if you are adding, say, art to an album of ten tracks, select all the tracks on change them all at once. If you embed the art in each track you don’t need a folder.jpg file in each album folder.

You can use a metadata editor to put these tracks into albums, give them track names, genres etc. DBpoweramp has a metadata editor so you should be able to use that.

You may also want to group the tracks into folders which you can view on a computer, and which will also be searchable if you use ‘folder view’ in Minimserver/Naim app.

If you have a lot to do Musicbrainz Picard is worth trying as a metadata editor. It can ‘listen’ to the tracks and match them to the Musicbrainz database, you can then review and save the metadata.

It doesn’t find everything but I have been using it a lot to tidy up my collection with some success.

Another option is Metadatics (available for Mac) - it can also assign metadata ‘automatically’ by using all available databases as references.

Thanks for this. How do I embed album art in a track ( on a Mac)?

Thanks

To edit metadata or embed cover art in it, you'll need a separate program: while I use MP3Tag on a Windows PC, many here seem to use Metadatics for a Mac ...

Thank you all for the advice.  I'm going to attack the metadata on my hundreds of stand alone tracks now.  Also, only about 300 CDs left to rip now.

I've been assured it'll be worth it in the end ....
