UnitiServe missing music files question?

Posted by: Dr_J on 12 December 2017

Hi All, UnitiServe users in particular.

For better or worse, I have obtained an ex-demo, 2016, 2TB UnitiServe, which appears pristine. Followed the manual to set it up and everything appeared to behave exactly as expected; I found the Naim demo files, the disk contained no other files, the download folder was empty. However, when I continued to explore, I found a number of, now defunct, network shares which I deleted with the exception of \\NSSRVnnnn\downloads which I take to be a pointer to the Downloads Folder. I then proceeded to rip three of my CD’s, apparently successfully - insert CD, watch CD being ripped on Ripping Monitor, CD auto ejects after last track ripped. But........

None of my three ripped CD’s appeared in the UnitiServe’s library, not in the web interface, not in n-Serve (Mac) and not in the Naim App’s UPNP player......

It appears that ripped music is not being added/updated to the Unitiserve music database - a guess.

Have I missed a step - Phil Harris perhaps? (BTW, SQ from the demo files is terrific, puts my NAS solution in the shade, although can’t think of a good technical reason why!)

Appreciate any thoughts.

KR, J

You need a store folder to be created for the ripped music to be saved to automatically. Create a folder and ‘promote’ it to a store` status - just follow the steps in the manual.

The architecture is, I believe similar to my HDX.
This has "Downloads" folder, an "MQ" folder which is where my CD rips get automatically stored and a "LQ" folder which is where the Mp3 versions of my rips are automatically stored.
I suggest you create folder with the same names as I mention above, and make sure MQ is, as Adam mentioned, a "store".

The only folders you should have on the internal drive of your US are the Downloads folder and the Music folder, the latter containing 3 sub-folders, LQ, MQ and HQ. The MQ folder is where your CD rips go automatically as you rip them. Have you inadvertently deleted these? You should not attempt to alter the contenrs of the music folder via a computer, only via one of Naim’s interfaces.

Once the US has found a folder that it identifies as a network share, it remembers it, so you will see it listed in N-Serve etc. You can delete them, or just ignore them, they are harmless!

Regarding your missing rips, if you have an MQ folder, there is often a delay before they become visible in N-Serve and/or the Naim app.

Thanks Chrissu, all folders present and correct as per US spec and I am aware that caution needs to be exercised in how the user adds/deletes content.

However, having recognised music files from a USB stick, the US then proceeded to rip further CD’s without any issue, placing the content as expected in MQ.....

I’m not even going to begin to try and understand or explain..... putting it down to the vagaries of embedded WinXP, and I knew that before I bought the US, so shouldn’t complain .

So I appear good to go, now just have to master getting Backup to my Synology NAS sorted.

Thanks all, consider the question answered.
