Is Tidal on it's way out?

Posted by: DomTomLondon on 13 December 2017

Just saw an article on a popular tech site that Tidal only has about 6 more months of cash left to last. If true, It's a bit of a shame. As I was hoping that it would at least force others, like Spotify and Apple Music, to introduce a lossless streaming option.

It would seem that the lossless and MQA streaming Tidal does offer is not enough to take customers away from Spotify. I trialed Tidal Hi-Fi for a month and found it okay. Sound quality was a little better then Spotify, but not enough to warrant double the price. Also not all albums where available as lossless. It's not properly integrated into the Naim system the way Spotify is, so again it made playing music on my SU a bit confusing, having to jump back and worth between the Naim and Tidal apps. Finally the user experience in Tidal leave a lot to be desired. There are very few playlists and the music recommendations are awful. Quite a few people I talked to also said that they rather have a great user experience and continue using Spotify. So I can see why Tidal has not been able to get the customer numbers it could have.

I have Tidal FLAC subscription. It is great, especially classical. I don’t understand how listening in FLAC streamed can suggest buying a CD at 320. Can someone explain?

What do you mean “a CD at 320”? If you mean Kbps, CDs are 16bit 44KHz 2 channel, which is 1411 Kbps not 320.

But of course, music can be purchased at higher resolutions and stored locally and so better than CD - and without the limitations of online streaming.

tidal seems secure, i have no problems, their playlists idea is good too.   tidal is good if you have a R2R. IF it stays  at £20

No ...it's the standard 6 month pay up front subscription...about £16:66 pm ...and one free month they give you

Thanks! Must have another look to see if I can swap over.

Nope, can't see that sort of option open to me. Can anyone point me to these details?

You need to be a " new customer" that means a new email address...

Or I did read somewhere that you can put in your old email with newaccount on the end and it would see it as that

Then just take the pre paid 6 month option and get one month free...so 7 months for about £102 is about £14.66 a month

tidal is the musical paradise, hope it never goes broke.

one of the big players will buy it out anyway for couple of dozen millions - apple google facebook or Netflix.

Go and get your Qobuz abonnement. These folks deserve your support much more than Tidal anyways....

Thanks. Does the payment method matter? I currently pay with Paypal

Maybe it's been updated since I used it a few moths ago.  I found the Tidal interface in the Naim app quite limiting, and I had to switch back to the Tidal app to search for new albums. Then I tried to play the albums within the Tidal app, but could not figure out a way to control the SU with the Tidal app.

You should be able to search in Tidal witin the naim app.

The tidal app standalone cannot control your SU. The control of the SU has to be from the Naim app.

Don't think payment method matters??

I changed over from monthly to (7) month using PayPal and it was the exact same  (PayPal) account I used with no issues

Strange searching from Tidal works fine in the Naim app, however it is done using a search button in the top right corner of the tidal main screen. Not  the other terrible nonstandard search gesture used for searching your local mmusic.
