QNAP NAS and Asset UPnP Server Software - There's a Problem

Posted by: nigelb on 13 December 2017

I have recently installed a QNAP TS251-A NAS initially for backup purposes but now wish to use it as a music server as I want to move my UnitiServe on. I am using a NDS streamer by the way.

The music storage folders on the QNAP have been correctly set up and configured (with the help of Naim's installation guidelines and Phil - many thanks) and all my ripped and downloaded music files (now in FLAC) have been copied over to the QNAP.

I have successfully used the QNAP UPnP server software but the SQ was not as good as my UnitiServe so I have installed a 30-day trial version of Asset and the Asset icon appears both in the QNAP UI on my iMac and in the Naim App in the UPnP screen alongside the Naim and QNAP UPnP icons. The problem is that Asset is not seeing my music files. Looking at configure in Asset, I have tried to put the correct strings in 'Watched Media Folders' without success. Looking at the QNAP help section it says that the QNAP version of Asset will automatically find the correct music folders/files but a sticky on the QNAP forum seems to dispute this and suggests an app (which is no longer available) to discover the correct string to type in 'Watched Media Folders'.

I am now at a loss as to why Asset on my QNAP is not seeing my music folders and suspect this is a rookie mistake/oversight. Can anyone help me please?

Frustrated of Chesham!

My watched media folder is /share/Music/ if that helps. Obviously, all the music is in Music.

Can't see you've done anything wrong from your text. As HungryHalibut says you just need  /share/Music in the first  "Watched media folders" box. You don't need to run anything.

You need to use "/", not "\" as the delimiter and you need to have created the folder you're pointing to first. As "music" existed I created  a new one called "Streaming" and my path is /share/Streaming. You can create this from the QNAP console using File Station. Use permissions of  777 to ensure access.

Don't think it matters, but I've stopped the QNAP up'n'p server and have only Asset running.

Nigel (B) - completely out of my depth here but back before I bought the CDS3 and I was contemplating a NDS I questioned the guys from Naim as to the best way of ripping and storing and they said that whilst you can quite successfully use a PC/MAC > NAS they maintained that the best way was Unitiserve or HDX WAV.  Not sure whether WAV still applies (it does on my iPod!!) but I just wonder if ditching the Uniti is the right move.

But as I say completely beyond my field of expertise.  I of course recommend a wax cylinder

Lindsay

You could also try Minimserver, it's free and can be found in the Qnap apps library.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I have tried entering /share/Music/ in the 'Watched media folders' box in Asset and still Asset does not see my music files.

When I look in FileStation in QNAP on my iMac the structure of the music files is MusicNAS/DataVol1/NaimBackups/MQ/Artist Name/Album/ Track for my ripped CDs and MusicNAS/DataVol1/NaimDownloads/Artist Name/Album/Track for all my hi res downloads. This is as per the Naim installation guidelines and confirmed as correct by Phil.

Does this alter what I should enter in the 'Watched media folders' box or is something else wrong?

QNAP usually has a default "Multimedia" folder (at least mine does). Is it possible that your Music folder is actually a subfolder of the Multimedia folder? If so, your filepath should be /share/Multimedia/Music.

Assuming that "MusicNAS" is the network name which you have assigned to your QNAP NAS drive you can ignore it for the filepath as the "/share" part of the filepath takes care of this.

I think it has to be /share/MusicData etc

share is the mountpoint for smb

Looking again at the filepaths you've detailed I'd suggest you try:

/share/NaimBackups

and

/share/NaimDownloads

assuming that these folders have been created as public folders on your NAS. I believe that you can ignore the DataVol1 since this is simply the name assigned by the NAS to the RAID volume you created when setting up your NAS drive.

use file manager to navigate to where your music is, in mine it's /share/MUSIC/music, you can see the route that way

Thanks to all who responded, especially @SJBABBEY and @PETER1480 - you both nailed it for me in your own ways. I must have tried every combination of file strings except the ones you suggested. I was also making the mistake of including DataVol1 in the strings I was trying. Rookie mistake I know.

Success, I can see my music via Asset. Now to see or rather hear if there is any difference in SQ with files served via the US and via the QNAP using Asset. If not, I will move my US on to part fund another black box and might introduce a Core if I find ripping and file management a pain without a Naim server later on.

One other question. I assume at the bottom of the Asset configure page if you select 'FLAC' and then select 'as WAV' then Asset will convert native FLAC files into WAV files on the fly. Or am I misunderstanding this setting?

Yes, this setting will convert and serve FLAC files as WAV to your streamer.

If it's any help, I have two folders on my QNAP which are "watched" - they are, one per line in Asset:

/share/MQ-Music/
/share/Download/

MQ Music is a copy of what my HDX created and the download folder is errr, where I store my downloads :-)
