Switch or no switch

Posted by: JohnL on 14 December 2017

Hi all, bit of advice needed (IT novice). I have my NAS drive directly connected to my router (SKY) which in turn connects to an RJ45 socket in a bedroom. This is then connected by CAT 6 cable to another RJ 45 socket in the lounge behind the hi fi. A short length of Chord C Stream then connects from this to my NDX.

Do I actually need a switch and if so, why and where would i put it ?

Many thanks

John

you have a switch in the sky box

one port of it connects to your nas

another one connects to your NDX

surely you meant to have Chord Cstream in the wall too? Why only the last few feet?

I don't bother with a 'switch', the fewer crappy smps you have plugged in whilst listening, the better.

a dedicated switch for your nas and streamer only gives better sound quality :  you connect this switch ( a little 5 port one) to your router with a short lan cable ( or longer if you prefer).

ifi power or linear ps give also improvement vs the stock smps.   You have a lot topics on that in the search part of the forum.

Your Sky broadband router has a switch built in, and I suspect that will perform satisfactorily for your needs... especially for Hi-Fi... as Hi-Fi audio is not all demanding on home Ethernet.

I have the latest Virgin Modem and find the fabled Cisco switch makes a significant improvement.

I've never been convinced all the routers are as good as they could be in the switch department,  whereas I am convinced on a pukka switch.     You will probably need to take a £20(ish) punt on a switch & a low cost hook up cable to find out.

Hi all,

Many thanks for your replies.

Jon H, no the Cat6 is general computer stuff laid in the wall and has been for some time (about 12 meters worth). I can borrow a cheap switch, I may try that just to see what, if anything, it does to the sound.

cheers
