Latest Core Update Issues?
Posted by: Kevin C on 14 December 2017
I would be interested to hear if anybody else is now experiencing issues when ripping CD's following the latest release of firmware earlier today to version 2.5(9144).
The CD appears to rip fine, but then when completed it is not being ejected and requires a manual eject?
I have not ripped a CD yet. And did make a comment on the Jon Honeyball Core thread that the download as quick and I could not remember all of the fixes included. However I do remember something about poor/failed rips needing a manual ejection.
Again on the forum really poor communication from Naim, it’s pitiful, no joined up internal communication.
That is of interest Gazza, as the first CD I ripped did have ripping errors on the last track. But subsequently all others have ripped fine, but still did not eject and required to be manually ejected. Now concerned and wondering if something may have gone with the eject mechanism following the first manual eject process. I hope not, as this purchase has been doomed. Initially supplied without HDD screws. Currently unable to configure backups to a QNAP NAS and now this.
OK now my update. I deleted 3 Albums. One looked pristine, and 2 were selected as being my worst (disappointed they had that many scratches over the last 20 years). The pristine ripped no errors. The following 2 discs took their time over some tracks and recorded errors. If I now go to play these albums I see 2 or 10 errors for these tracks etc. The CD,s ejected perfectly.
Now I will try and play the tracks
Now playing tracks with errors, jus as I suspected cannot hear any SQ issues. Useful info or a waste of time? Be interested in the opinion of Jon and David Hendon, as never going to put them in the bin, they do not stop, jump, crackle, like an Lp? Open to be enlightened?
Looks like I may have a mechanism problem then created when the paperclip was first inserted. Will have to check this out in more detail tomorrow.
Sorry can not help till Sunday
Have you tried disconnecting from the mains supply for a minute and then re- connecting, worth a try.
I tried doing the update today,it got about half way through on the bar,or gauge that pops up....then it said “error doing update” or something like that.I ran out of time, had to come to work,so I will try again tomorrow...oh no,not again!
Okay latest news. I tried powering the device on and off, but still no auto eject. So contacted the support line and after going through the ripping process whilst on the phone, the rip completed, the CD did not auto eject, but the CD was able to be ejected using the normal eject button on the front below the power button, without having to resort to a manual eject with an unbent paper clip.
An email has now been duly sent as requested by Naim support detailing all the steps that have occurred. We wait to see.
At least the mechanism is not damaged and the unit does not have to be returned, so I can still continue ripping CD's.
I haven't tried ripping yet.
The full list of fixes and features is in the Uniti Update thread which is in the top of the HiFi Corner room. The way that works is that Naim edit the first posting to include the updated info and then post a short post to the thread so everyone following gets told it's there. So go to the thread and start from the top.

I have just ripped a couple of CDs. Neither of them showed any errors and both ejected normally.

Personally I wouldn't worry if you can't hear them. But it is still useful because if a CD rips with errors, I would probably give it a careful wash and polish and do the rip again. Jon's point all along was that it's not helpful to discover some weeks later that the CD didn't rip properly, (especially if you operate across more than one site like he does I suppose). But we will have to see how useful the info is from experience. If it's a new CD bought from someone like Amazon then if it has any errors it's probably worth sending it back to be replaced and the new Core monitoring does strike me as helpful in that regard.

I got home this morning, the App told me to restart the Core,so I did...now I am using version 2.5,and it all appears to be working fine.
Good point on the new cd,thanks David. The information on rip errorsis displayed well, for me anyhow
Download was fine. Selected two well loved CDs. Ripped perfectly and ejected. No worries here.
Problems still persist. New one now. CD's that ripped fine yesterday now have errors. Why am I re-ripping you ask? Reformatted hard drive to rule out anything to do with this, being a new device to me and hardly ripped anything as yet what had I got to lose. Well obvious now! Losing faith with this particular unit. Frustrating to say the least. Time to go to sleep and try again tomorrow.
Maybe I have just have one of the units assembled at the end of the day when they just wanted to go home. Such a shame having had sterling use from a MuSo and MuSo Qb for the past 18 plus months via Tidal, Spotify and an old Cocktail Audio X10 that I wanted to replace.

Except they didn’t rip fine yesterday. They had errors then but core was lying to you.
That’s been my point for the *LAST YEAR*. Hopefully people start to understand my anger with Naim over this.
And ditto on hdx and unitiserve.
This is the first time that a Naim ripper has been honest about its rip status *EVER* (ignoring the last two months of uniti star which got some of this capability in September)
What about metadata editing? Any progress here?
Just got a demo Core. It updated. If I play some of the music it came with it stops at the end of the first track and then has to be turned on and off to be able to play anything again. It then does the same again.
The front power button does not go off in standby, but the eject one does. Seems an odd way to tell you it’s in standby.
Any suggestions on either of these?
Phil
Understand your annoyance Jon, but it was strange though. Yes I am seeing errors now, but the first twelve or so CD's ripped fine, then the next three had errors. Maybe coincidence. At that point I stopped as it was late and will try again this morning in case these occurred when it became warmer after multiple rips. We wait to see.
Regards editing metadata, I have found this fine for what I have needed so far, but only when using my iPhone, not via an Android mobile.

It sounds to me like it has a faulty CD drive and I think you should take it back to your dealer for an exchange.

Phil, make sure the firmware is at latest level v2.5. To do this touch the cogwheel in the right hand corner of screen, and touch check for updates. If not let it update.
when you hold the power button for a few seconds, it starts to flash, let go, and it is then in standby. In this mode only the power button is illuminated.

The second of these points is correct. The power light being lit tells you that it's not completely off.
On the first point, are you using the latest version of the app? When you tell it to play are you doing that via the app? Is this in upnp or is it a direct spdif connection to your DAC?

Or you can just leave it on and it will automatically go into network standby after a period which is determined by the setting in the app. All the lights except the power light will go out but the important thing is that you can still talk to the server over the network, so play music, change the playlist or whatever.

David and Gazza, thank you for your replies. The app is installed yesterday. I play through the nDAC just as I do the UnitiServe.
