Latest Core Update Issues?
Posted by: Kevin C on 14 December 2017
I would be interested to hear if anybody else is now experiencing issues when ripping CD's following the latest release of firmware earlier today to version 2.5(9144).
The CD appears to rip fine, but then when completed it is not being ejected and requires a manual eject?
After my update, a lot of my album artwork no longer showed. I powered down the unit, but that did not fix the problem. I then cleared the image cache on the app, and now none of my artwork is showing. Any thoughts?

I assume you tried killing and restarting the app?
Failing that, I would be inclined to do a factory reset of the Core. TJ explains how to do that in his post earlier in this thread.
What he said was "Factory reset. Do this by powering off the Core. Then switch power on with the standby button held. Keep holding the standby button until the light above the USB socket flashes. NOTE THAT THIS WILL DELETE YOUR FAVOURITES AND PLAYLISTS"
When he says power off the Core, he means completely off, so turn off the mains supply to the Core at the wall and proceed as he says above.

I did the factory reset, and I see the Core is now rebuilding its database, but it’s doing so without artwork. I’ve reinstalled the app and no luck with that either.
[@mention:1566878603988063] Any thoughts on MMcculloch's problem after the update?

Maybe Tom will come back with some advice.
A question. Are you looking at the Core directly in the Naim app and not seeing artwork there or are you viewing Upnp in a streamer in the app? If the latter, have you tried restarting the streamer?

Thanks. I’m viewing the Core directly in the app and not via a streamer. My music library consists of music on the Core’s internal drive, connected via a NAS, and also music on USB drives connected to the Core. All of this music is seen by the Core but none of it is showing artwork now.
So none of this is ripped by the Core?
If you rip a CD now, by the Core I mean, does that show artwork?

Some of the music on my Core consists of ripped CDs, but the artwork for those is not showing. All of my folders have a “folder” jpg for art, and those files are all still there.
And if you rip a CD again or a new CD does that show artwork?
I did wonder whether Naim have (inadvertently) changed the range of artwork filenames that are permitted but rips made by the Core should work whatever. I vaguely remember that when first released the Core demanded that downloads artwork was contained in a file called "frontcoverart.jpeg" but that was quickly changed by Naim to allow cover.jpg and folder.jpg.
But my Core still shows all its artwork ok after the update and I'm not sure what to suggest except I think you may have to contact Naim support and see what they suggest.

That’s my fear also - that somehow the update altered the parameters by which the Core identifies the artwork files. Do we know if any way to check this and correct if necessary?
Well best thing is to give Naim a ring and ask. The phone number for technical support is in several obvious places in the Forum or you can just ring Naim in Salisbury and ask for Technical Support.
But if they had made a change like that, (either deliberately or inadvertently) then I would expect someone else to have seen it. But there wasn't any such report during beta testing of the update nor in the public forum since the update was released. And of course the release notes don't mention it, which I would expect they would do if it were a deliberate change.
But that's one reason why I suggest ripping a CD and check whether the artwork is ok on that. You could also edit the metadata on a ripped album with the Naim app and see whether it will let you change the artwork.
And you could edit the artwork name in one of your other folders with a PC and see whether that helps display the artwork.
There aren't many Forum regulars here at the moment, but maybe over the next 24 hours or so you will get someone else with other suggestions.

I think you have covered most bases David, get a quick call in to Salisbury HQ before they depart for Xmas.
Like David, I haven't seen this on my Core. I think Naim are still around until midday tomorrow so probably worthwhile calling or emailing support today.
The second factory reset seems to be working - album artwork is appearing again as albums load. Thanks for all the help! I’ll report back if anything goes haywire.

Very interesting that it needed two factory resets and that the second one worked and fixed the issue. Worth knowing for other forum members who come here with a problem! Thanks for feeding back and fingers crossed that it will all be ok now.

I had a few anxious moments yesterday, but none turned out to be catastrophic! The context is I am demoing a Core with internal Hard Disk.
1. I wanted to rip my CDs to a store on my Lenovo IX2 NAS which I had cleared Windows File History from as OneDrive secures my files and needed the space for music. I set up a new share on the NAS with the same name as the Core one and granted RW access to everyone. I then made it into a Music Store and opted for it to be the primary one for rips. Next thing I know the albums etc. on the Core disappear! Panic! So I look at the NAS share from my PC and much to my surprise the albums from the Core are appearing! I could swear that looking at the Core I see the MQ Music empty! The next thing I do is to go into the Music Store and find that it can see the original Music Store so I reinstalled it and hey the Albums start reappearing mirroring the progress of copying the files to the NAS share! So now I kind of have two mirrored copies!
2. Having copied everying to the NAS I contemplate importing one of my small NAS shares created by the UnitiServe on the Core thinking the Core was once again the primary Music Store. Low and behold the stuff starts being copied to the NAS Music Store! At this point I also see all the albums on the Core and that Downloads contains the same files that are appearing the NAS Downloads folder. So the two Music Stores are really mirrored! I stop the import.
3. The playlist that came with the Core did not work so I decide to delete it, being a tidy kind of person. Next thing I know all the albums etc. disappear in a flash as well as the playlist! Panic! I try to see if the the settings menu show the Core Music Store, but all it does is to show a rotating waiting thing everywhere! Panic panic! Well I decide to start by restarting the App and thank heaven everything is back to normal!
I still want to have a NAS Music Store to put new rips in. Can someone tell me whether I can do this without everything being copied into it? Thanks in advance.

My covers are .png files. Not had this problem

You can only have one Music Store Phil. That is where the Core will store its rips. Everything else has to be a music share. You can have as many shares as you want.

Artwork has stopped appearing on my Atom after updating the Core & App to the latest software. In addition when ripping and using the Ripping Monitor the track counter doesn't work - it stays on 0/n for n tracks. Slightly concerned that every album I have ripped now also appears under "Albums with ripping errors" ...
Naim can't seem to fix bugs without introducing others .
I've emailed Naim but no reply so I suspect I'm stuck with this over Christmas .

If you don't get a reply from Naim, you can try what has been discussed in this thread, ie doing a factory reset of the Core, you might have to do it twice....That sorted this issue for Mmcculloch.

My Core is showing Firmware up to Date with Current version 1.5
any ideas ?
If you turn off and restart the Core from scratch, it will probably find the update either as it starts up or after it has restarted. You should be using the latest version of the IOS or Android app too, but I imagine you are already?

Yes to the apps. I've depowered it but i guess a factory reset is next, i dont really want to lose my playlists....
I would give it time. I found mine picked up the update after I restarted it twice.

Hi David, So you have never seen it create a mirror copy? Should I change the Music Store to a local share before adding a network Music Share?
If I promote what was a Music Store downgraded to network share back to a Music Store will it zap it?
