New speakers are set up and sounding rather good

Posted by: Ancient Mariner on 16 December 2017

I have just returned home from my Naim dealer with my new ATC SCM11 speakers and FS104 Signature stands. Just finished setting everything up around 10 min ago and they are sounding superb straight from the box.

The improvement over my previous Rega R5's is more than significant. One thing that was immediately noticeable is just how much louder the SCM11 are in my loving room compared to the demonstration room. During the demonstration I generally had the volume position on the DAC-V1-NAP200 at around 45. The volume setting I have currently is 35 which is fairly adequate. My NAP 200 has more than enough power to drive SCM11 to very high listening levels.

Another thing that was immediately apparent is just how much better they sound in my home compared to the demonstration room. Honestly the clarity and detail is just jaw dropping. I have them positioned around 13 inches from the rear solid wall with no toe-in at the moment. The bass is fast and tight with no overhang and the midrange is excellent. I may play about with positioning at some point, but my initial impression is to leave them as they are because the balance is pretty much perfect. I would assume they will continue to improve over the coming weeks and months, although I would be totally satisfied even if they remained the same. Now it's time for some of my favourite music

Excellent result.  Everything sounding right straight out of the box is a solid sign of a good choice.  Enjoy.

Thanks SongStream I knew from the very first note played the system balance was spot on.

Nice. Enjoy your loving room. That's what it is for!

Congratulations Ian. I knew from the first moment I switched on and listened to a brand new, not yet broken in, scm40 speakers that they were the one. Over the following months they relaxed and bass came out of its shell, a little more than I was expecting to be honest.

It's great when a plan comes together.

Thank you Halloween Man, I bet those SCM40 are excellent, they had some in the shop when I carried out my audition of the SCM11. Very impressive indeed. What I absolutely love about the ATC is their ability to make music so simple yet pin point accurate. I'm literally hearing things I've not heard before, truly impressive performers. Your mention of the bass coming out of its shell is interesting. Currently the bass on my SCM11 is just about perfect, I certainly would want any more.

HM - great result.  Speakers in my opinion set the tonal balance of the system and you have clearly achieved a great result.

Thanks Lindsay, agreed on the tonal balance. There are so many choices of speakers all which offer varying tonal differences. It really is a personal choice and because of this an audition is very much required before buying.

HM, great to see you loving these speakers. All you need now is to solder the internal wires direct to one set of speaker inputs - or better still fit WBT sockets - it really lifts the performance even further

Thanks alanbass1, I wasn't aware of this. My NACA5 currently has the F type connection. I've never heard of the WBT sockets before. Something to keep in mind for sure.

Thanks joerand I could not be happier with both the SCM11 and my system at the moment.
