System Pics 2018

Welcome to System Pics 2018.

To start things off, here are a couple of pictures of my setup. There have been some big changes over the past year; a 300 and a 555PS, and some extra shelves to accommodate them.

I was just about to show pics of my system with an added turntable and Stageline, but I have changed my mind. I don't want to take part in this pochade this way.

I'll send a few pics to the couple of interested friends whose email address I have. And I can't wait to read the reports by the first ND555 owners who'll call the NDS 'BIC' (broken in comparison). And what will become of the poor NDX (£3800) when the ND555 will be released? How low in the hierarchy will it go, down from 'basic'?

Max, it sounds like you need to understand that the Naim brand in its self is not aimed at people that are struggling to pay for food each week or living by a day to day basis. Those people don't drive Porches and Porsche isn't targeting that market. At the same time a Boxter would be classed as basic against a GT3RS so the term basic is in context!

Popeye,

you're right and I thank you for the serene and sensible reply. It's true, Naim is not for proletarians and the right of luxury companies to exist, and the precise sense of their existence in the global market has been discussed a lot of times, so I don't need any supplementary lessons – which, to your merit, you didn't try to give me.

To be honest, I have to admit that I wrote my reply after I had browsed my professional email page, and, as always happens, a couple of emails from colleagues had been enough to put me in a bad mood. You have nothing to do with this, and your system not only is far from being basic but is very elegant.

Out of curiosity, why limit the 'venom' to Naim, as opposed to 'High-End' Hi-Fi in general?

I know that 'Naim bashing' is the No. 1 sport in the world of Hi-Fi, but...

Talking of which, perhaps MAX_B's recent 'series of posts' are actually an attempt to dispel one of the myths so beloved of the aforementioned bashers - Censorship on the Naim Forum, and anything other than unquestioning adulation of all things Naim is not allowed?

(Sorry, JAMES N, couldn't resist ). Back to the pics... (hopefully )

Alba,

I'm sorry but I don't fully understand your post. Were you relating 'venom to Naim' and 'bashing Naim' to me...? And the subsequent proposition is equally twisted and out of target, because it seems to mean – if I translate it into an English I can understand – that since I aim malevolently at Naim and nobody censors me, that contradicts the commonplace so diffused elsewhere that the Naim forum is full of censorship. If you think so, either you don't know anything about me in spite of the hundreds of posts I have deposited here in the years, or you don't actually read them. Or my bad mood hasn't yet dispelled and it's me not understanding.

Probably a topic for another thread. Can we just stick to posting system pictures ?

PS - Nice system Popeye. The KEFs look rather good in white.

James, you too may be right, but honestly, it was a matter of two posts. Sometimes the lack of pics goes on and on for pages. I hope I won't lose one of my 13 followers, of which I am very proud, for a moment of polemics. Why, are you all all Saints (not meaning fans of the Southampton Football Club) here?

Basic?

Why don't you show these pics to someone working in a call-center at the monthly wages of your wiring's cost and under the daily (if not hourly) threat of redundancy?

Nothing personal, but this forum has completely lost any contact with reality. NaimWorld has gone mad.

Damn man.Lighten up a bit. I think someone above stated basic as in non complex or simple. Nothing wrong with that. Compared to many here my 3 box system is rather basic. Now show us the new gear. Enjoy it! Let's not worry about offending people that may or may not give a damn about our collective madness and thousands of dollars spent on having a good time instead of saving the world.

I have replied to my original post and to Popeye's reply, who was by far the fairest – noteworthy thing, given the circumstances. It looks like no one here has ever a moment of grumpiness; good for you.

Here are my basic interconnect wires. They’d need 418 hours of labour at the U.K. minimum wage, once it’s increased in April. That’s a weird concept, somewhat divorced from reality, but they do work well, and they look nice too. Donning a hair shirt and sitting on a spike while listening makes their ownership morally defensible.

As others have said, let’s leave the moralising elsewhere and enjoy the thread for what it is - the simple enjoyment of a harmless interest that unites us all.

Last, HH. I always wonder that there is someone more gifted for sarcasm than me, especially someone with which I, elsewhere, have shared pleasant, civilized, friendly moments. Yet, if I think of it, at a close exam yours is the most biting, sarcastic, stiff and subtly despising answer I have received – and considering that my post had nothing to do with you, you must consider it a mission to stick your fangs wherever it hurts. I am not surprised that – being able to buy costly things and at the same time appearing like a totally no-frills, matter-of-factly plain owner of very normal gear – people here adore you. But I miss the other guy.

GraemeH,

sorry but I couldn't watch the whole of it. It was a bit nauseating and I had caught the concept after 20 seconds or so.

Max - It's about time that Turntable of yours was shown *hint*

Posted on: 07 February 2018 by Massimo Bertola

With pleasure. It's a very normal Pro-Ject RPM3 Carbon 3 (€445 without cartridge), with a Grado Blue 1, Stageline N (not shown because placed at some distance).

I chose it as a compromise between a reasonable upgrade over a 1978 Pioneer PL112D and a watchable thing from 21st century. As a note of some interest, it is so far powered by the SN's aux2 socket through its regular SNAIC5, and in these condition I have to turn the volume pot almost to 12 o' clock to have some loud volume; with the SN's gain so high (I'd open windows if playing CDs at this pot position), a slight background noise is clearly audible in the BMRs when no music is being played. No ground issues, though.

The yellow sofa is not the listening position.

what is that rack Max? look lovely

Posted on: 07 February 2018 by Massimo Bertola

Thank you. It's a Guizu (Chinese furniture company also building stuff for audio) single shelf of which I superimposed three, using their own spikes and protectors. Having no children, pets and a very sensible and caring wife I simply put them one on top of the other, each decoupled from the others. I periodically check their vertical alignemnt with a tool I made (four 90° angular rigid lengths of hard cardboard I place at diagonals).

Really nice set up Max. Looks like an excellent value for money system that I imagine must sound great.

Looks good Max - nicely understated and lovely rack too.

Thanks. Those with a special commitment to the brand and/or pronounced sensitivity can avoid looking below the SuperNait.

Looking good with the RPM Max.

I remember that Guizu made some lovely stands for the LS3/5a/Harbeth P3.  I have no idea how they performed but they looked really nice.

And a quick search of the internet...

I like others sometimes find this forum to be a particularly strange place to visit. On the one hand you have those myself include who are honest in their hypocrisy,  sometimes finding the discussion of spending  large sometimes huge amounts of money on something as frivolous as hifi distasteful when there is so much poverty in the so called civilised west whilst at the same time owning expensive hifi's. And then on the other hand you have those who seem to have quite a socialist and humanist view of the world bemoaning Nigel Farage and Tory principles in general and then become quite spiteful in defence of their matrialism and the right to spend these large amounts of money on the frivolous.

I have only just fully read the whole page of this thread and I feel I must fully agree with Max here. I have also been on the end of some quite caustic remarks because of a similar view I took.  This is a forum a place were ideas are exchanged and hopefully views differ from time to time this gives balance to the debate. The above reply is completely out of order on all levels and is a terrible advert for HH, this forum and Naim Audio. Lets show some humility people please.
