2017: the year I rediscovered music

Posted by: Stephen_C on 19 December 2017

I have posted from to time time since ordering my Nova in February and installation of it at the start of September. It was a year marked by ruthless ripping and indexing of CDs, downloads of high resolution music and, finally, relaxation into rediscovery of classical music.

The Nova and streaming of ripped or downloaded music from a NAS has revolutionised my listening. No longer do I have to walk across the room to change CDs part way through an opera. I’m also much more inclined to put on a short piece of music now that I don’t have to remember how to program the CD player.

Maybe it’s just that I’m a lazy listener but since arrival of the Nova the music has been a true joy. Whether it’s discovery of new sounds from old ripped CDs or the journey into gripping high resolution downloads 2017 is ending here with one extremely content listener.

I apologise for the slightly incoherent post. It’s not so easy to put into words just what the Nova and streaming have given me - but I am very happy.

Wonderful to hear Stephen. I went through a similar experience 5 years ago when I bought my Uniti. High resolution music to the hearts content without having to get off the couch is a dream come true. The  ova sounds like a very special machine.

Streaming is brilliant. A few years ago I digitised a thousand or so of my favourite singles. Now I can queue them up just like browsing through my boxes, but without leaving my sofa.

All my CDs went into the NAS, and not to mention streaming services such as Qobuz.

Yes, it was a right pain digitising stuff (I could never face doing my LPs). But great payback.

.......having a streamer with TIDAL and a NAS with a 1000+ of CD's and HiRes downloads at the fingertips is fantastic!

Oh I do agree!  Another benefit for me is that I can easily find tracks or works from CDs with a mixture of composers.  For example, there is a piece by Butterworth that is a filler on a CD where the main work is Vaughan Williams London symphony.  Since I filed classical CDs in alphabetical order of composer I had to remember Butterworth to find the symphony.  Now all I have to do is tap on composer, then V, and I get to all my VW symphony recordings.

By the way, have you tried HD downloads yet?  I am listening to a superb recording of l'Arpeggiata downloaded from Qobuz as I type this and find it hard to resist the temptation to air conduct instead of typing.

Very much so—from Sir Colin Davis conducting one of his last performances of the Berlioz Requiem, through the stunning Mahler 3 with Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra to the viscerally hair-raising "Rite of Spring" conducted by Teodor Currentzis. I know exactly what you mean by air conducting: it's my personal subconscious measure of the oft-discussed "pace rhythm and timing", I think!

Is that the 1913 London Symphony (LSO/Hickox) Roger? That’s my go-to version.

Yes indeed.

Welcome to the club of streamers Stephen!

Similar to you, I invested a long time into ripping and tagging my CD's and many friends' CD's to build a great collection consisting of classical, jazz and pop/rock, all at my disposal with a fingertip. Even my wife loves to have all her favourite songs available so easily, including playlists.

I use media player of JRiver, an excellent piece of software which rips, tags, sorts and plays my > 25,000 songs with great ease. I applied some tagging rules which are very helpful to ensure consistent tagging of both classical and modern music in the same database.

Enjoy your new musical life!
