Record Cleaning Machine

Has anyone out there used the Hannl Aragon RCM?

Wow, I just took a look at their site - that's quite some machine.  It seems it can even be controlled via your iPhone (why?).

I seem to recall on a recent related thread there was mention that a well known Naim dealer (also a specialist in Linn LP12) sells the Hannl machines. Obviously they can't comment on them on here so maybe worth looking them up.

Indeed. Possibly because the more devices an iPhone owner can enslave the better command of their lifestyle? Less touching of extraneous devices is more convenient? Seems directly at odds with a physical medium.

Give me a Loricraft over that (plus the change in my pocket) any day.

I see its been discontinued but for me it wouldn't be any good as I can't get a phone signal in my living room! lol

Related to the business of cleansing the beloved vinyl; I've experimented with different brushes (on my Moth RCM) and found one of these to do the best job.

The combination of the side brushes and velvet pad seems to penetrate the cleaning fluid into the grooves most effectively.

I like the Clearaudio pro but the Oki Noki does the job well enough.

Funnily enough I have found the Super Exstatic to be much the best dry LP cleaner as well - perfect for just taking any light surface dust off an otherwise clean LP.

I have a box full of the also-rans that I've used and collected over the years.  I've likely got an example of just about every record cleaning brush offered for sale in the UK in the last 40 years.  There are a few weird ones too like the Maxell electric LP cleaner that drives around the disc, a Pixall still in its sealed bag, and the Nagaoka sticky roller cleaners that quickly become rather unsticky.  I still have a nostalgic love for the Discwasher brush which I got as a set while at school with the wooden base and the wooden stylus cleaner.  There's rather less love for the Decca brush that has a tendency to leave its fine brush hairs behind every now and then - not good. And while the Goldring/Milty and Clearaudio carbon fibre brushes are pretty good, it's the Super Exstatic that trumps them all!

+1 for the Super Exstatic, I use two, one for wet cleaning on the RCM (Moth) and one for dry cleaning on the LP12. Does the job most effectively.

Richard I’d love to have a look round your museum/house

I too use a Super Exstatic for light dust removal on the LP12, but although the Okki Nokki RCM effectively removes all static, the Super Exstatic seems to add at least enough static to risk the occasional lifting of the felt mat, which is a a huge threat to stylus longevity!

I managed to get a VPI cleaner from a certain auction site a couple of years ago. It needed a new suction head and foam motor washer but does a wonderful job. I use VPI and Clear Audio cleaning fluid and always new inner sleeves from Nagaoka. The VPI is as loud as a vacuum cleaner so the house knows when it’s on!

i recently got hold of a Roksan cleaning pad. Not cheap but works really well especially with a Zerostat pistol.

I should have added that I use a couple of goat hair brushes with the VPI. The work a treat

I should add too that looking through the various brushes I have, the Super Exstatic pictured above is the one to get. It was available in earlier form as the Hunt EDA. There was an earlier Goldring Extstatic that was narrower and similar to the Clearaudio and probably a whole bunch of others that were very similar apart from the brand label - not quite as good.

Although I don't own an exstatic I always use both a carbon fibre and then a velvet pad to clean dry records before playing I got into the habit when I used an AT OC9 cart which used to love collecting dust. Carbon fibre brush first and then the pad it always surprises me how much dust can accumulate on a cleaned record sitting in a liner and a cover one of the great mysteries of our time, perhaps Sir Stephen Hawking could look into it.

Hey, I just want to say thanks to all espousing the Super Exstatic. Just bought one from Shipley, UK for a total cost of only $15. Hope it will supplant my currently favored SRM Tech Super Brush on my Okki Nokki. Carbon fibre seems a better option to the natural bristles and wooden handle of the SRM. I'll see whether one cleans the grooves to any identifiable difference.

Has anyone ever used an ultrasonic cleaner?
