CD5XS general failure!

Posted by: tonfan on 22 December 2017

The first time the laser died, was three years after purchase from new. I repaired it. Now, after four more years, it started producing very distorted sound during playback. I sent it to the official dealer (in Greece) and it was diagnosed with DAC failure! The replacement cost seemed quite high and I decided to think about what to do. It was returned and I connected the digital output in order to use it as a transport only, but the transport started skipping (again) and the remote control stopped responding as well! There's nothing left to break down I guess.

I was planning to spend my Christmas holidays listening to music, but my cd player had other plans. I already started looking for my next cd player (NOT NAIM).

I am really disappointed!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Get yourself an Oppo 205 BD. Then you can stream, watch films and have access to those wonderful  class-leading DACs and Transport that will play almost anything. Locks onto my Core and QNAP without fuss too.  I use one alongside my NDS when I want to dig out a SACD or DVD Audio disc. Built like a tank too...but not exactly small

On the other hand I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with Naim - seems you win some.....

Happy Christmas

Failure of the Burr Brown PCM1704K DAC chips is very rare.  Who replaced the CD5xs laser?  Hopefully they took full ESD precautions.  One thing's for sure though, laser mechs don't much like couriers.  I hope you have a better Christmas..

Does that really matter as it lasted several more years before a separate component failed??
