My SuperNait freezes even after firmware upgrade
Posted by: Robiwan on 24 December 2017
My SN had the firmware upgrade last july at my dealer to get rid of the freez/locking up problems. After the upgrade it performed without any issues at all till last friday. Since then it has freez up about 8 times after selecting a different input (both analoque and digital or even the rec/mute button). I now have set all inputs to analoque and disconnect the coax cable for the Sonos streamer. It looks like to be stable now but it is very strange why this did happened the last 4,5 months? There where absolutely no issues at all! There is not been a change in gear etc either.
I contact my dealer again in the first week of january.
Anyone has an idea?
have done a factory reset, hope this will help. Only the rec aux 1 button blinks when pushed on?
I am surprised you are still having problems like this. I read a thread years ago, where Naim had solved this problem. You had to get new firmware installed by a Naim technician. You say you had the latest firmware installed. So, it is strange you still have the problem.
I never got the new firmware installed, because I would have been at least a week without my Nait. Also, I do not listen to much TV, and it did not happen very often. I just lived with the problem, until I replaced the plasma with a LED.
In your case, it happens much more often. I can understand your frustration.

yes the 01-04 firmware last july done by a technician at Latham the Dutch Naim importer/distributer. So it is strange why the problem occurs. The replies so far aren't very helpfull, yes it is not done to say something bad about Naim. The IR/IC input boards are crappy!
The SN is now stable for over a day after the factory reset. But the aux 1 rec button is still blinking when been pushed? Anyone know how to get it not to blink? The Sonos is connected to the tape coax dig in.
Have you connected something to both the front 3.5mm input and the rear AUX1 input? Do you have anything connected to both RCA and DIN on the same input?
I can't see anything in the manual specifically related to the flashing REC button on AUX1 though. It may be a fault mode indicator. Or perhaps it's to tell you that you don't have any analogue tape input/output enabled (you say you have Tape assigned to a digital input, so no tape out) so it's warning you that you won't be able to route any signal to tape input. You'd probably need someone from Naim to confirm or not.

A flashing LED indicates an input conflict. The SPDIF board only supports playback of a single input at a time. I would try going through your input set up's again. I would also try moving the Sonos to another input, it might be its causing a conflict on the Rec selection, it shouldn't be but maybe its tied into the Rec row button flashing if the tape loop is a problem.

Both NO

I shall email Naim
Do remember that Naim are not back until January 2nd so you won't get an instant response.

okay that's fine because i'm happy now the SN seems stable.

aux 1 rec stops blinking when the rec mute is pushed
OK it is still indicative of a conflict, have you checked for an input conflict as I suggested & also changed the Sonos input from Tape.

did the factory reset again input settings again and pushed to aux 1 input en than hold the aux 1 rec. Blinking is over
I have experienced similar freezes two times since I have recently connected Squeezebox Touch to my SN1. I could not recreate this issue however it was during switching from digital (optical<-Squeeze Box Touch) to analogue input (to my second DAC). The software version I have is 1.3. Do you think that update do 1.4 will solve the problem? Is it free of charge?

because mine was a demo from a Naim dealer the firmware upgrade to 1.4 was for free.
I now know why my SN froze the first time friday dec 22. It was right after connecting the Allae speakers again without power off the unit (it was muted). That probably triggered a instability. But only after the factory reset the SN was stable. So tip of the day: Always power down the unit
The Christmas led lightening, switching PS's (pro-ject tt, Sonos), my plasma, the connected Sonos, all the remotes, my laptop, my phone, the polar vortex, NO that does not make the SN unstable after the firmware upgrade!
Happy to read mr. RKenobi. Magic box, the SN1. How is the pairing with Allaes? Im looking to replace my BW CM1's by other speakers which can stay close to the wall.
Ardbeg, With apologies to Robin, I suspect Allaes could be Naim's most universal speaker in terms of amplifier matching. The dealer whom I bought mine from told me there are owners using them with a NAP300. From the forum I have gleaned that others like Clay, and until recently Iver, are using them as I am with essentially 5 series stuff.
I have found that they need to placed near the wall or the mid-range seems to disappear. Mine have 12cm behind them. Naim recommend a minimum of 10cm. Hope that helps.

pairing is great but allaes are a pain in da butt to sound right in my living. Luckely my dealer has done that
Hi Christopher, I have indeed used the Allae with 5 series for many years. It is a wonderful match. The Allae’s are very flexible towards amplifiers. I recently changed to SuperNait2/HiCapDr with them, and they really shine. However like Robin already mentioned, finding the correct placing for Allae’s is very difficult. If changed so many times before finally finding what I liked (no complaints, that is also part of the hobby). I do think that Allae’s can stand their own into “big Naim systems” as long as the room is not too big. Cheers Iver
