Questions about Nova with B&W CM6s
Posted by: Freedomsounds on 27 December 2017
Hi Everyone, I am new to this site and new to naim products. I'm in the US, and would like to know if anyone can help me out with a couple of questions I have about the Nova and the speakers I plan to run it with. I am in the process of buying a Nova and already have a pair of CM6 S2s.
My first question is will they be a good fit for Nova in general ?They are being run in a smallish size room.
My second question is involving cables. I have pair of pair of AudioQuest Rocket 44's that I have for the CM6s. my question is can I use the banana clip on the 44's with the Nova in place of the naim supplied speaker clips the Nova comes with ? Or do I have to use the naim supplied clip ?
Thank you all your your help.
Hi Mr Freedom,
the CM6s are not that large speakers, so the Nova should have absolutely no problem to drive them to the best of their abilities, certainly in a "smallish size room". You may also consider a larger sizer B&W speakers. I tested the 804D3 with the Nova and found it a great combination.
Good luck!
Thanks Burt.
You won’t need to change your banana plugs - the plugs you have on your cables will be fine.
As Bert says, absolutely no problem powering the CM6's. I have them as well. Really good speakers that sound great with Naim
Thanks to both Tallguy & Marcusman for your info. It's a big help
I have CM5 S2s, they are an easy load for Naim Amps. Currently connected to a Nait 5 for AV purposes. The Naim amps are a step up from the CM series of BW. If you like the BW sound, I would consider the 800 series of BW.
But ... first the Nova. Your CM6's will sing new highs and lows.
Thanks Ardbeg10Y for the info
I am just curious, has anyone out there tried the Nova running a sub in a musical context ? Preferably the Rel T7i It's just a thought !
Yes - see my profile. The Velodyne sub is superb with Nova and N-Sats.
My Dynaudio speakers are probably more power hungry and inefficient then your CM 6 speakers and mine run excellent with a Star, the Nova will be fine.
Thanks Callas01, for the input
Hi All - not strictly addressing the OP's question but, for what it's worth, I have an Atom driving CM6 S2s and I'm very happy with it... I'm fairly new to all this and haven't sampled many alternatives (I already had the speakers) but I don't detect any signs of a struggle and it goes plenty loud enough for my medium sized room. I added a sub to give a little more low end punch but I honestly can't really tell it's there unless I'm listening to dance/electronica. The sub is a B&W PV1. It's already l connected to my home cinema kit via line level input so I use the speaker level connection (with a 45hz crossover) and it works a treat.
As I said on the other thread, first thing I would do is scrap the AQ Rocket 44 cables & replace with a simple straight pair (not bi-wire) NACA5, or one of the Chord or TQ's.
If you must use AQ Rocket, do not bi-wire. But most important make sure you do have them configured as recommended by AQ to give higher inductance & minimal capacitance.
To Radeber : thank you for sharing the info on your system, mine will be almost the same. May I ask what you are using for cables for your CM6s and what you are using for interconnects for your sub ?
To Mike-B : You have been a great help. I went to my dealer here in WPB.fl and he has a pair of NACA5s that he's willing to let me try, we just have to figure out jumping for them. And I'm definitely over the Biwire for the Nova. Thanks to you guys ! And the only reason that I wanted to use the AQs is because I will be running all of my connections with AQs and felt if I changed the speakers cabling from AQ and run everything else with AQ that the difference in sound may not blend well. But at this point I will give the NACA5s a chance and go from there. I will say I was surprise with the thickness And the stiffness of the NACA5s. Anyway, again thank you for your help
Hi Freedomsounds - Thanks. Yup I'm happy to provide the extra info. I'm fairly unspectacular on the cables I'm afraid... I use Chord Clearway (£10/metre) between the Atom and the speakers. It's possibly a little on the cheap side but I had a bunch leftover after having my surround speaker cables routed behind the walls as part of a building project. With the PV1, B&W don't give you much choice but to use the supplied speaker-level cable... let's face it, it's basically a 4-core telephone cable complete with RJ11 connector at the sub end. The PV1 manual says "the subwoofer presents a high impedance load to the stereo power amplifier and takes very little current, so may be connected in parallel with the main speakers with no adverse effects." For the same reason it goes on to suggest there is no tangible benefit from using a higher gauge cable and I was happy to follow their advice.
Thanks
Hey fellows, this post does not have to do with speaker so much. I was talking to a person the other day that was telling me that most people he know with highend equipment does not use line filters or power Conditioners. I was kind a taken a back by the comment. So I felt I would ask you guys here what you think ! Being here in Florida (the lightning capital) my thought was how else are you going to protect your investment ? Anyway would like to hear any thoughts on the matter. Thanks
I’m in CA, and here I use a Monster line protector.
