Mp3tag directory size

Posted by: Bryce Curdy on 28 December 2017

Does Mp3tag have a maximum directory size?  I've been doing a lot of work on my library and the associated tagging and now have over 20000 tracks.  This morning I had issues adding artwork (took several attempts) and then Mp3tag did a force shut down after I tried to save a single tag.  It would then not restart coming with a 'device is full' message (my NAS drive is only half full).  I had to restart the computer and tell Mp3tag where the directory was (it normally finds it automatically) but all seems to be working properly.

A couple of stupid questions:

Where is the tagging data stored?

Is there something I should be backing up?  I see the menu gives me the option of saving the configuration.  I was assuming this was the choice of columns/fields displayed (and hidden).

The tagging data is stored on your NAS. You are right about saving the configuration. Unfortunately, I don’t have experience with such a large directory, mine is about half the size ...

Thanks Klout.

Is it stored as a separate file or embedded with each track?  Would iTunes (or other software) recognise my updated tagging?

This is called metadata and is embedded in the music files itself. Other streamers using UPnP will recognise the changes that you've made. I have no experience with iTunes however ...

Do you load the entire tracks on  the nas just to edit one album? Usually I just load the tracks into mp3 that I want to work with.

Yes, all tracks.  I find it a good way of keeping tabs on my library (as well as editing metadata) but am open to other suggestions.

I use Mp3tag on a regular basis. I've never had any issues but I only ever edit one album at a time, so i guess that this is the way to go. The largest 'edits' that I have donehave been the Louis Fremaux CBSO (260 tracks) set and the Steinway Piano Legends (300+ tracks) set. Which is way below the number that you have been loading.

I do not understand at all. Would you open all your word documents just to edit one or 2 of them?

I think many users here tend to have a main music directory and then use a artist/album folder structure for non classical or a composer/work folder structure for classical music. This would obviate the need for loading the main directory folder into mp3tag whenever you open it.

As mp3tag runs on your computer, I'd guess that the limitation (if any) on size of directory it can load and how quickly would depend upon the computer specs e.g. processor speed and RAM spec. It might be an idea to open task manager while you have mp3tag open to check the amount of  memory and PCU percentage being used by the program for any given size of directory loaded.

I think I'm just doing so much tidying up of metadata just now that it makes sense having everything available.  Or then again it probably doesn't make sense!
