**HELP** Restoring to a new UnitiCore from a NAS drive

Posted by: deepinsight on 31 December 2017

I've just unboxed my brand new UnitiCore and installed it onto my network, updated the firmware and now want to restore my Music Library from the LQ and MQ directories which were the backup directories of my old UnitiServe.

Trouble is, in the UnitiCore App on my iPad I go to Settings, Manage Music, Restore from Backup, Restore Music to a New Store I see "No drives found".

Similarly Import Music and Configure Music Shares both report "No drives found".

Under Manage Music Stores, View Network Drives again I get the message, "No drives found".

So - The share settings workgroup is the same as on my PC. The UC appears as UNITICORE in my network drives via file explorer under Windows 10 on my PC. I tried copying from the NS drive folders LQ and MQ but the UC has protected drives and will not permit a copy that way. It does however permit a copy od the LQ and MQ directories to the 'downloads' folder on the UC's HDD.

So, essentially what I'm asking for is how to get the new ( and empty ) UC ( with a brand new formatted 2TB HDD ) to see and read the drives of my NAS devices so that I can restore the 1K+ CDs that I ripped to the previous US ( which has had a new HDD following the failure of it's 5 month old one ! ).

Sorry to hear you have a problem, hold tight, hopefully David Hendon will drop in the forum. Alternatively do a search, it’s probably been reported before on the forum.

It's a while since I did this and there have been several firmware changes to the Core, but I found that to get my Core to see my Unitiserve, I had to define the Unitiserve as a music share and then I could do the import.

The latest firmware is supposed to have improved the Core's ability to see shares, but I have seen a few posts here which remarked that the updated Core couldn't see the NAS drives on the network. You are probably going to have to talk to Naim support, which is back in the office on Tuesday 2nd Jan.

In the meantime, I have also found that restarting the Core a couple of times can make it behave more as you expect and there have been a couple of people reporting problems after the latest firmware update that required one or even two factory resets to correct. You do a factory reset on the Core by turning the power off completely, then hold down the standby button and  turn on the power at the mains. Keep holding the standby button until the light over the front panel USB flashes, then you can let go off the standby button and let the Core finish starting normally.

The other thing that is always worth trying in these situations is restarting your router.

I hope some of that helps, otherwise I suggest you copy into the downloads folder for the time being. You won't be able to edit the metadata using the app, but you will be able to play music with the app.

Thanks for the informative response David.

I'll call Naim on Tuesday, and in the interim use the downloads folder. Just to make clear - My UnitiServe is now blank, with a new 2Tb HDD in it, the only backups I have are on my NAS devices.

Not sure if I am reading your post correctly, but if you have a brand new core with a new 2tb drive inserted, can I check have you made that drive set up as a music store , to enable it t be used for importing music.?

perhaps the core message if no drive is because you haven't set up the core drive as a store, so cannot start any imports until this is done. And nothing to do with the music you gave stored on the nas.

once he is set up you should then search and see the nas drive and import ok from it.

Hi CBR600 ( nice bike...),

Yes, I've set up the UC as a Music Store on its local 2TB HDD.

Interestingly the UC can now see 1 of my 4 NAS devices although not the one with my backups on it ;-( - and my PC froze and wouldn't respond ( black screen) to kdb or mouse and needed to be buttoned.

So, perhaps it's just a matter of time whilst the UC 'discovers' the network environment..

I don't suppose your PC needing to be rebooted is anything to do with it, but the Core now seeing one NAS is more interesting.  Did you try rebooting the router? A network that seems to be working fine might be ok except for stuff related to discovery, which doesn't affect things that are already settled e.g. Your PC browsing the web.

And of course restarting the NASs is also something to try. Traditionally it's everything off, leave it for 10 mins and then restart router first, any switches, NASs and then Naim units in that order and letting each complete its restart before starting the next box.

An update for you all - I've now managed to restore all of my music collection from the 'backup' MQ area to my UnitiServe. I used the 'move music' function and let the UnitiServe rebuild the LQ directory by encoding the WAV files moved into its MQ store into mp3 files in the LQ.

BUT - the UnitiCore still doesn't see any network drives........

As I understand it, the Core doesn't have an LQ folder, or the ability to create an MP3 'parallel library' like the US, so you would need to manage this library separately, maybe on the backup NAS? Of course, that doesn't solve your Core problem, which is presumably a separate issue.

OK - Update for all you folks.

On the advice of Steve Hopkins from NAIM technical support I set my UnitiServe to see one of the NAS drives directories containing the backups from the now dead 2Tb disk that was installed into the US as a Music Store. I then used the Move Album function within the UnitiServe to move all WAV files from the NAS drive to the MQ folder on the US and likewaise for the mp3 files in the LQ folder.  Result is that the US in now back where it was when the original 2TB drive went bang.

Now - over to the UnitiCore. This still didn't see any of my NAS drives, at all - nada - nowt zilch.

So, I did a bit of reading and research and found out the Microsoft have turned off smb support in update 1703. It also seemed that the presence of at least 1 Master Browser service should be running on the NAS drives....

I configured 2 of the NAS drives to run the Master Browser Service, turned off all Windows 10 machines on my network and ....

BINGO - the UnitiCore now sees the 2 NAS drives which have the Master Browser service enabled on them. I've set these as Music Stores and can now see all of the albums I've ripped. Hurrah !!

I've noted that the UC does only rip to WAV ( or FLAC  user selectable ) to the MQ directory, although according to Phil Harris at Naim these may be a future upgrade to allow mp3 to be encoded to an LQ directory as per the US.

So - All systems go and now to thrash the UC to see what it can do and how it does it......
