Nova Volume Control from Spotify (Android)

Posted by: Dan360 on 04 January 2018

Another new Nova query. When I first unboxed the Nova, one of the first things I liked was in first play via Spotify the volume control on the phone (android) in the Spotify app gave fine volume control. One-click was equal to one volume level.

However I see to have lost that control without changing anything. First to increments of 6. But now it jumps unevenly. 27-40-46 just now listening to Roger Waters. I can't seem to find a setting on Spotify App or the Naim App to control that.

Any ideas?

I have found that when using iPhone volume buttons to control my Atom (with Chromecast or Airplay inputs) the volume increase from a single click varies wildly from one source to the next. One app might change the volume by 2 increments per click, which is OK. Another might jump by 6 or 12, which is just bonkers.

Maybe worth a Nova power off, wait and then power back on.

From the Naim app you can in the settings have a volume bar, but if I recall correctly the Naim app just opens Spotify.

On a streaming service choice, i used Spotify once and never again, as 320bps was not good. I do hope Spotify get a move on and go lossless, that would be perfect for me, as i use Tidal at the moment and Spotify/Deezer car and for family accounts.

Think Spotify are too focused on their IPO

Thanks chaps. Got round to setting up a test install of Roon on my Synology backup server today. Trying that and Tidal. Still think I should be able to just use the Volume on the side of the tablet/phone with that. There are a bewildering number of volume options there, but none that seem to allow me to use the button on the phone to change the volume. I guess I'm going to have to use the slider/button on the app, or use the Nova remote.

Apple will not allow just anyone to use their volume control buttons - you would have to be using Airplay and/or jump through a lot of hoops before they will allow app developers to use them. Perhaps they should be even more careful who is allowed to use it, given the shoddy implementation.

Before you give up totally, there are some settings in Roon that disable volume control so that you don't have so many. Also, you can set it to play to Airplay devices, which might even give you access to the buttons, but I haven't bothered to experiment with this.
