Speaker upgrade????
Posted by: andyharc on 05 January 2018
Hello all
With the New Year here I am looking at upgrading my very modest Naim system. At present I have a CD5, NAC202, NASP, Flatcap2, NAP150x. KEF Q5’s. I think I need some better speakers. Where should I turn to match my system. I have like located a set of reasonably priced Intro2’s I believe. Would they sound better? I know it is all relative But I value this forums opinions.
Thanks.
You might want to look for a pair of Naim Allae's. They sound wonderful !

Indeed it's all relative. I'd say exhaust all speakers available locally for no-cost demo in your room and gain perspective from there. Speakers are 100% about room-fit and your tastes. I could tell you speaker X worked great in my room, but of what value is that to matching your room, system or expectations?
Why do you think you need new speakers?
I would consider a source upgrade, you’re running an entry level CD player into a quite capable preamp.
allaes will cost you £800 from a dealer (google it) try and get a way to audition them. They’re a bit coloured but you don’t notice after a short while and they’re very enjoyable.
Intros really are at the bottom of the food chain and don't always command much respect on here
Personally I would not give them floor space ..and yes I have owned them in the past...
Speakers are such a matter of personal taste. Choose to match your tastes and the room in which you'll use them. Listen to loads, short-list a few and try to get the dealer to allow a home demo.
Then pick the ones you like best.
And consider buying secondhand d to maximise buying power.
Is the CD5 considered entry level??

Within the Naim hierarchy, yes. That isn't to say that it's a poor CD player, but in terms of system matching/synergy, your amp is capable of showing off the talents of a 'better' player, maybe up to CDX2 level.

Interesting supposition to me - that an amp can show off a source. In my experience, the amp has much more to do with powering and showing off the speakers' capabilities. PSU's, interconnects and power cords on the source are more germane to upgrading the output of a source than is the amp.
I’d avoid Intros 2s. I ran a pair with a CD5 and Nait 5i and found the presentation very forward and harsh at times although that may have been the amp. If you went for them I strongly suspect you’d be looking to swap out before too long. If you want Naim speakers then, as others have suggested, the Allae are a good shout but also see if you can try a pair of Kudos X2s which are wonderful and versatile speakers for the money. I don’t know what your budget is or where you are located but you should be pick up a pre-loved pair for around £750.
