toe in Sopra-3

Posted by: jsaudio on 06 January 2018

Having trouble deciding on whether I like the speakers pointing straight out ie. no toe in or some degree of toe in. Not sure I hear a difference and not sure what I should be looking for. Common wisdom is that it should make a big difference in sound stage, tonality etc. Any opinions, especially first hand experience with Sopras?

Very much room dependent.
A simple trick: listen to a track that you know well, preferably with clear vocals.

If stereo imaging is lost (ie sound seems to come from the speakers, rather then from the middle between the speakers) start toing them in. Once the ‘gap’ has been closed and the singer is in front of you - you got the perfect toe-in.

Thanks for the reply Adam. It seems I can place the vocals in the center whether there is no toe in or some toe in with intersection point behind me still though. Cant tell the difference.I thought that if they were pointed directly at me it was a bit bright but vocals centered as well. Might just be my room acoustics. Speakers are about 8 feet apart and sit about 8.5 feet from speakers. They are back about 3.5 feet from front wall.

I think it’s about trial and error, because all rooms are acoustically different.

My good friend Finkfan has just added some bass traps in his listening room, they make a considerable improvement to soundstage, depth of bass ect ect

My Sopra 2’s are toed in a little, and they work exceptionally well.... so I would experiment using a track or two you know really well ....

best of luck

OK - that’s good.

Just tweak them a bit to a point where bass response seems to your liking.

Toe-in is one factor How do you get these leveled in the first place?

Quite simple really put the spirit level on the base plate just like I did.

The  operating instructions also come with some basic suggestions for placement  but it will be to personal taste. My dealer did mine (along with Jason front Naim). A very slight toe in which seems to work very well on my 2s.
