Supernait2: B&W 702 S2?
Posted by: todaca on 19 January 2018
Hi,
I've been thinking about changing my loudspeakers (B&W CM7), has anyone had a listening to the B&W 702 S2 together with the Supernait 2? What are you impressions? Until now I was really impressed by PMC loudspeakers and at the moment I would be for the twenty5.23. Any other loudspeakers around this price that deserve a listening? Thanks!
Have not heard the pmc 23. But have heard the 24 and 26. Absolutely love the 26.
PMC and the B&W will sound completely opposite from each other. I heard the 702s and found them nearly bright, every PMC speaker I’ve heard has always been rich and warm.
I’d strongly suggest listening to both before purchasing and determine what sound you prefer.
I use the PMC 25.23 with my Nova, sounds lovely, well balanced sound with nice top end, lovely midrange and good drive and extension in the bass. I use B&W 804s with my olive amps, again lovely, but different presentation, I’d agree with Callas that the B&W sound is a bit brighter, the 804s unsurprisingly have more and better controlled bass than the smaller PMCs (the 135s probably help here as well as the size).
i love both speakers, but I’d strongly suggest auditioning, it is quite a different presentation. When I auditioned the Nova I also listened to Neat SX1s and liked them, I was less impressed with Kudos X2s finding them a bit lacking in drive, but I know other people love them.

I have a Supernait2 and am looking for small decent floor standing speakers. I heard the 702 S2 with a SN2 at my dealers and it sounded good but I preferred the detail and soundstage of the PMC 20.23
The 702 S2 had a fuller bass presence than the 20.23 which you may prefer and will obviously need to listen for yourself. My short list is:-
1. PMC Twenty5.23
2. Spendor A4
3. ????
My dealer speculated Spender will replace the outgoing A6R with something that sounds like a midpoint between their new A4 and their existing D7 at the £3k mark to rival the PMC 25.23
I love the sound of the D7 but its just too large for my room.
FWIW - I think the PMC 25.23 and SN2 are a brilliant pairing but speakers are like shoes - at the end of the day you have to try them for yourself to know whether they fit.

I have the A4’s with an Atom and they’re lovely, I recently spoke to a chap from Spendor and he confirmed your dealers speculation, they’re currently in development and will be out later this year I think he said
Thanks Merky
I loved the little A4s when I heard them and I imagine they sound terrific on the end of the Atom. That's a nicely matched set up you have there.
I'm basically hanging fire on upgrading until I can compare this new model (a D5 perhaps?) with the 25.23s before I decide to buy. The latest small floor standing speaker from B&W, Spendor and PMC I think will all be a great match for a SN2 so its down to personal taste and room to determine what is best for the OP.
Thank you all for your comments.
I haven't had the possibility of audiotining the 702 S2 yet but last Saturday I listened to Neat Momentum SX5i and to Totem Forest. I was impressed by the Forest as they had an amazing musicality and they could present the soundstage and the instruments very well but my ears were somehow too much captured by all these instruments. As soon as I switched to Momentum SX5i I soon felt more relaxed - although they had much less dynamic they sounded warmer. Compared to the Momentum SX5i I still prefer the Twenty5.23, but has anyone ever had such an experience as I had with the Forest? I mean, recognising dynamics and subtlety but not enjoying the music.
@KAIDEE6 I listened to PMC Twenty5.23, Twenty5.24 and fact.8 and I really loved the fact.8 but as my room is at the moment not that big I'm preferring the 23 (and also for budget reasons). I have also read that the Twenty5.26 sound even better than the fact.8 (because of the Laminair) so I can imagine why you loved them! :-)
Home dem of some Proac D20R's at the moment sound very good with my kit.
I have heard that the 702's need some power behind them to make them sing. My local dealer recommends 250dr at least!
I'm demming the 703's at the weekend although they may be a problem for me as they are rear proved and my speakers are placed either side of a large bay window
Thanks PHABH for you suggestions.
About the NAP 250 DR, do you mean that your local dealer recommends it in addition to an integrated amplifier for biamping the B&W 702 S2?
I would really appreciate if you let me know your impressions about the 703.
I would suggest you at least listen to something from the Focal Aria range. I've heard the Aria 926 on the end of an SN2 and was very impressed. Ultimately they were not for me, but they certainly made a lasting impression. I also listened to the Twenty5.23s and was unimpressed; I thought they were pretty awful to be honest.
I love Spendor with Naim. You should also add Martin Logan Motion 40 or 20 to your audition list.
I have just bought a pair of 702's to go with my N272/250dr they sound unbelievable, however you do need a powerful amp to drive them though.
I have tested a number of speakers PMC/PROAC/ATC etc and nothing comes close to them for the money.
The midrange is clear and precise Simple Minds/Sting/George Michael/Eva Cassidy all sound natural and Nirvana and Foo Fighters rock as they should with a mighty bass.
I then listened with an XPS Dr power supply and they opened up even more...incredible.
Need to save for an XPS now!
I just took delivery of the 702's this morning and they are brilliant. I have listed to them for hours today and they can handle everything that I have thrown at them and I have been told that they will sound even better in a couple of months.
The dealer even said that I would not notice any discernible difference between the 702's and the 803's (unless you crank up the volume!!) and then he did say I would probably need a NAP300 to do 803's any justice. I will stick with where I am for now...very happy.
your supernait 2 should be able to drive them given that it has a similar output to a 250dr.
Anyone heard the 702s with the
Exposure 3010S2 mono power amps.
Does anyone have experience of running the 702 S2 with a Superuniti? I am contemplating a switch to a floor stander for around the price of the 702 S2 these appear to be more sensitive at 90dB spl. than others I have tried.
I haven't budgeted for a bigger amplifier and this is my main concern, would the SU be up to the task?
My findings with the ATC SCM 40's are that the SU doesn't have sufficient control over the bass.
I haven't heard the 25.23 but have had fb1 and ob1 before and tested the 20.23 which I could have gone for, but I preferred the Quad S5 which I settled on. I found them more natural sounding and dynamic than 20.23 even though they are less expensive.
My friend brought his nova to my place and the s5's worked really well with it, I like they way they match with Naim and also Exposure amps. My friend found a used set of 20.23 so that's what he's running with his nova. He's very happy but still thinking of changing to the Quad speakers at some point.
