Problems editing Hi Res Qobuz albums metadata with dBpoweramp
Posted by: pixies on 19 January 2018
I was fortunate to be able to download some of the Hi Res bargain albums from Qobuz being discussed in the Music Room thread, however am having a few problems sorting out the metadata. For Example I have bought the Beatles Sgt Peppers album which annoyingly has downloaded with 'Artist' and 'Album artist' as 'The Beatles'. I want it to appear with all my other Beatles albums, so have tried to change the metadata (via dBpoweramp) to 'Beatles, The' just like all the other albums. However after doing this the album completely disappears! Similarly I have tried to put some of the REM albums from their 'Complete Studio Albums 1988 - 1996' into individual album folders, ie creating one called 'Green' and moving the tracks into it. However when I do this it won't appear!
Anyone offer any suggestions as to what i'm doing wrong? I have used dbpoweramp for many years and never had any problems like this before, even with Qobuz albums that have required some editing.
Cheers
..Just a further update:
It seems if I make any change to the original metadata it causes the album to disappear, ie just adding (Hi Res) to the end of the album title, which is something I do as a matter of course with Hi Res albums.
I hate these random frustrating issues. Quite new to straming and struggling slightly with metadata editing.
So I'm probably. Ot the best to advise but have you tried editing with something eose like Mp3tag?
I use Metadatics on the Mac to edit the tags. I store everything as wav files. The files are served up by Asset. The way you describe the issue it sounds like the database just needs to be updated to reflect the changes. Occasionally I have to restart Asset when it gets its knickers in a twist. It might just be whatever program you use to serve the files needs a database update.
Thanks for the replies so far. I have been refreshing my database after each edit so that’s not the issue. Will look into Metadatics and Mp3tag.
I should also add that my music is on a Synology NAS and I use MinimServer to play my music via the Naim app.
Ah, I used to have that problem with Qobuz downloads. I found that clearing the cache on the Naim app after I’d added the files to my NAS (Synology 115j and 216j) worked.
Ok Eoink, I’ll try that.
You can set Minim to put the ‘The’ at the end, so you don’t need to do it manually. Rescanning Minim via MinimWatch and then clearing the image cache or upnp cache (I always do both as I don’t really undertstand what upnp, cache does) will fix the issue you are finding. It’s nothing to do with dbpoweramp.
I remember helping a fellow Forum member with one of his Quobuz downloads - took me 3 hours with Metadatics.
What eventually worked was: stripping all files off all the metadata and performing an automated on-line lookup + manual corrections. Nightmare but it worked.
Mp3Tag gives the option of overriding existing metadata with lookups from online sources such as MusicBrainz and Discogs. I have been using this feature extensively over the past day with Qobuz downloads. It’s not perfect, but it gives a head start. I still have to clear those verbose Qobuz comments out of every track, but this can be done in bulk for each album.
While I’m at it, I also have a gander at AlbumArtExchange to see if the supplied cover can be improved upon, which it usually can.
I ripped all my Beatles CD's with dBpoweramp during the week or so I was waiting NDX delivery while I only had the Synology. For whatever reason they all got ripped into "Beatles, The". I vaguely remember selecting something along those lines but could be mistaken. Looking just now at all my Beatles albums I see the metadata header & file folder is the same "Beatles, The" for all my rips. However looking into the file of my two copies of Sgt Pepper (CD rip & 24/96) I see the CD rip header (track-2) is 02 Beatles,The - With a Little Help from My Friends. whereas the 24/96 is 02-With a Little Help from My Friends. All the 24/96 album is "The Beatles" in all the header & artist categories, & I don't see a problem with that, I just dropped the 24/96 download into the "Beatles,The" folder when I uploaded it. I suspect the problem is in the album heading, you need to change it all to "Beatles,The" & IME you will find Mp3tag might be easier to do that with over dBp.
Hmm. I bought that REM set as well as a lot of other stuff. I too use Synology and Minim, but I had no issues editing the metadata (with dbPoweramp) to suit.
However, I always download to my PC, fiddle with the data there, then drag it off to the Synology.
Thanks again for the continued replies.
HH, I have been doing the MinimWatch rescan and clearing image cache (I have always done this) and I have even tried same editing via Synology Filestation but still no solution. How do I set Minim to put 'The' at the end?
Wait... I have a dim memory of having a blanked metadata issue...I think it was a downloaded album as WAV that did strange things when edited. I used dbPoweramp to convert it to FLAC, then the editing went fine. It was a while ago, I am getting old, so the memory's a bit wonky.
Try SongKong
Maybe you have after edding the album-artist-tag two album-artist-tags. That is forbidden for minimserver. And that could be the reason why minim don‘t show the albums anymore. With mp3tag there is a possibility to read all tags and also if they are double. I had a problem with the tags „albumartist“ and „album artist“.
Just to be clear, when I copy the album across without any editing it is ok, its just that the REM album for example is a box set so that all tracks appear as a continuous list. I was trying to tidy things up by separating them out by relevant album. This is how it looks at the moment:
I general find their metadata is all over the place with collections, especially classical.
I used to download in Apple Lossless or FLAC, but given suggestions that Naim streamers may work better with WAV have gone with WAV for more recent purchases.
I'm starting to wonder if their metadata is better in some formats than other, or perhaps if there's a base lossless format and if other options are selected that the files are converted and generated on the fly which could introduce errors if the conversion tool is getting the metadata mixed up. Whatever the reason it's a real frustration having to sort out metadata but the various media server software inconsistencies probably doesn't help either.
Before I trashed my Roon core MBP and cancelled it, it did seem to me that Roon sorted out the metadata very well, and from memory even if Twonky made a pig's ear of it. Still mulling over a new NAS vs dedicating a MacMini or possibly a Raspberry Pi as a server.
That metadata for the REM set is just as it's supposed to be. It's a single entity (Complete Studio Albums 1988-96) split into separate discs for each album. All I did was name each album correctly (see above picture), add the right album art and copy that album into the correct folder on the Synology.
There's nothing wrong with it per se.
I'm 99% sure it's a MinimServer issue, not having re-indexed your album so that you can see it, or a Naim App issue looking at its older cached data. The server must re-index before the Naim App can see and then pull its new data (of course!).
This is ONE reason I have been using Asset server; it re-indexes IMMEDIATELY. I can add an album or edit it and by the time I've finished the edit and opened the Naim app on my phone, it's there in its new incarnation.
Quick update and thanks to Nick Lees suggestion. I have gone back to my Qobuz downloads and re-downloaded as WAV files. I am now able to edit metadata as I wish and then use dBpoweramp to convert to flac for streaming to my Naim gear. Good job I got these cheap as I'm certainly having to work to get them playing correctly!
Thanks again for all the useful suggestions

What are you editing the metadata with - same issue. I found my NAS shows the metadata from ALAC better as does directly storing the media on a USB device hooked to the Nova.
In all honesty I really couldn't care less about the metadata so long as an album plays in order (like an LP.....) as I tend to listen to albums not tracks, but to would be nice if at the very least artist/album worked properly - I think the issue with Qobuz may be that the album name can be a combination of all factors when it comes to classical including orchestra/conductor/composer etc

......... interesting & maybe nothing: I download, store & play in WAV, but its been the way of Qobuz & others to only supply FLAC. I download this, convert to WAV and then check out the metadata. I have never encountered a problem if editing is needed. I have also picked up downloads that contained no metadata, once converted to WAV I've then used Mp3tag & their metadata www search feature, I normally select MusicBrainz & one click loads it all.
There is a "convert to" option in dBpoweramp which allows you to retain the format and strip out any tags you don't want. I use it frequently.
Similar to Mike, I once got an album, from Qobuz which wouldn't accept tag editing no matter what I did. I converted it to FLAC, did the tag changes successfully, then converted it back to WAV. That fixed it. I have no idea why.
It can be easy to miss the Qobuz drop down to select file type when downloading. Been there, done that. Happily, they allow you to go back and download in different formats. Or you can convert them locally. They are all interchangeable, provided you don't alter the bit depth, sample rate and compression.
I've just finished tagging my marathon Qobuz spree. Well worth the effort. I've even started listening to some of it!
