Tinkling glass, cat, door latch…………… The TRUE audiophile !

The private Investigations diversion in the “Where to go (if anywhere) from NAC 52?” thread has restored my belief in Hi-Fi in its truest sense.

Forget “musicality” whatever that is !

Forget listening to a whole TRACK, never mind a whole SIDE of an album. Why would anyone in their right mind do that ? especially with HI-Fi equipment costing tens of thousands of pounds !

No ! it’s those little bits of background sound that creep almost silently into our records and CDs that we all want to hear. And excitedly share with our un-enlightened neighbours and friends. What use is a Statement, or an LP12/552/3x500 active system if all you can do with is listen to music. ?

So, this thread is for the TRUE Audiophile.

What other BITS of track do you know exis, that others, with far lesser systems, might be oblivious to ?

What are those BITS of track you take to that dealer demo and secretly listen for when deciding to spend the next TEN GRAND on a length of cable, or another little Black Box ?

Don’t be shy……..

The coughing or clearing of the throat (left of centre) followed by a sniff a couple of seconds later, just before Gilmore starts his acoustic guitar solo at the beginning of 'wish you were here'.

Nina Simone, 'He needs me' has some creeks and clicks from what sounds like the piano stool and some one fiddling with drum sticks. :0)

Also noticed the 'whisper' "Cha Cha Cha"? halfway through Fleetwood Mac 'the chain'

There was another Punch cartoon:

This CD's for real hi-fi buffs. It reproduces with total accuracy the sickening crunch and sizzle of a stylus hitting an old-fashioned vinyl disc

Eric Bibb ‘Diamond Days’ reproduces this with total accuracy too.

Intake of breath by presenters on the radio off my NAT 01

Posted on: 24 January 2018 by Mike-B

One of my per hates Tabby Cat,  plus all the mouth noises, whistling nose's & loose teeth.   All it needs is to keep presenters correctly distanced from the microphone.     And it's just as bad on my NAT-05

Loose teeth Mike....must listen out for that.

No seriously the detail from the NAT's are amazing.Pleased your one is bringing you much joy

Wasn't it Winston Churchill who said: 'Never so many wasted so much to hear so little'?

I remember QSound. Bomb the Bass - Winter in July was also recorded in it. I also remember Tomorrow's World doing a feature about it.

I remember nipping out to sit in the car to listen to it on the new-fangled Radio 1 FM, as we didn't have NICAM then. It was quite effective, Paula Abdul released a CD in Q-Sound, I might still have it somewhere.

Not hidden at all, quite the opposite in fact but the drama in Woman's Hour today on R4 to do with volcanos featured a young solo speaking voice panned hard left, with the same voice interacting with that dialogue and panned hard right, with volcano sound effects going on in the centre. It was the very opposite of hidden, but v unusual to hear these days. Brownie points to Radio 4 for making me look up from my work.

Listen for Buckingham saying the F word and 'stu, stu stu stuing' to get the rhythm right, right at the beginning of "The Chain". Turn it up a bit tho

I had in mind two old timer BBC people (now both departed).

An unintended additional sound on some classical recordings is the rumble of underground trains below the recording venue, Kingsway Hall. Odd when you first hear it, but adds to the ambience once you realise what it is.

Yes IB, the Kingsway Hall rumble is an ever present on all those recordings and yet to my ears they all sound great. I think because it’s a sound your ears can separate from the music and it doesn’t modulate the music itself. I find it ironic that with several HiRes  LSO Live recordings there are a variety of very off-putting noises which really do spoil the sound. I think some of it may be close miking revealing performers groans and bow scraping etc, but also I suspect the Tannoy system in the Atrium outside the Barbican Hall. I can’t believe Tony Faulkner didn’t hear them, but perhaps he thought they wouldn’t be heard by most listeners. Try Colin Davis’ Dvorak 8 or 9 to see what I mean. Frustrating!

Wasn't there an unidentified blip at some point at the start of "Jo" from Goldfrapps "Tales of us" album that caused wild speculation on this forum a little while back ?

Apparently someone says “Number 9” somewhere on The Beatles White Album.

At the end of Strawberry Fields Forever John utters "cranberry sauce". Certain owners of lesser systems of the day somehow interpreted this as "I buried Paul". Not sure how his words got so misconstrued? The "cranberry sauce" statement was clearly consistent with the berry theme of the song.

Audiophile (noun): A person who is interested in hi-fi equipment, and the sound that it makes. Actual music is of little concern, but musically irrelevant superficialities are of great interest.

Hi Alba,

I think that’s more or less in line with my interpretation

is that out of some dictionary, or hifi magazine ?

Yes: Close To The Edge - And You And I. At about a minute in where the acoustic guitar meanderings give way to the 6 repeated bass notes, there's an abrupt edit that truncates the guitar and keyboard, momentarily dropping the original to left only as the bass takes over. Presumably the tape was spliced at an angle. In keeping with the spirit of this thread, it's something I first heard on the CD version and can never listen to that track without waiting for it.
