Naim iPad app manual

Posted by: Arthur Bye on 23 January 2018

is there a manual for the Naim app that's used in the iPad?

Posted on: 23 January 2018 by Pcd

I don’ thing they do a manual as such but Naim list of app features on their website.

No, there has never been a manual. I did find that it took a little while to find my way around it at first, but with time, and a bit of trial and error in the settings menu, you get to know how to use it soon enough.

So, I've been wondering why the icon in the upper left hand corner of this app has never seems to work consistently. I've been using it for well over a year. I have four different devices that I'm using it with; some hard wired, some wirelessly. All of the other functions in his app have always worked fine, as have the different devices (NDS, Muso, N-272, Superuniti). The upper left hand icon which appears to be a set of books ( with one book tilted over), should take you backwards. I like to use it to search worldwide radio stations. I have no issues with my wifi and am located close to my wireless device. There does not appear to be a rhyme or reason for its availability. I've ignored this for months and months. It always eventually works. I don't see why its availability would be so erratic, when everything else works so well.

The books take you from the home screen to the now playing screen. If nothing is playing, it doesn’t operate. Once you get to the now playing screen the books are replaced with a house, which takes you to the home screen.

Is there a mnual for the iPad you are using?

Posted on: 24 January 2018 by Mike-B

.......  agree all the above,  including "does not appear to be a rhyme or reason".    However I suspect we might see some changes in future apps with new people at HQ.

Does anyone use the Linn control app on Linn systems (or another brand app)  that can comment on how they compare??

Talking of iPad's,  Apple released iOS 11.2.5 last evening (UK time),  nothing that obvious that I can see but the screen changes & app start speeds are a lot faster.

HH thanks for the response. Yes, I understand that the books in the upper left can take you to the home screen, but they must be illuminated to work. Activating a song on the device does not consistently do this. It just works some of the time. I've actually tried this on several devices now. iPhones of differing generations and and IPad mini and a full iPad. They all seem to work the same. Yes, I Appl devices all have current updates to the software

Curiously, the books in the upper left can strangely be illuminated on a device that's been out of service for a long interval, where devices I've been using regularly remain stubborn to respond.

i have also had a Linn system (Klimax KDSM) for a while now and have gone through the Konductor, Kinsky and now Kazoo apps for Linn kit. The older Kinsky app is the only one that recognizes the Naim control points. It (Kinsky) is not as good as the current Naim app or the more recent Linn Kazoo app. I do like the Kazoo app. It's pretty robust and is pretty intuitve. It's a little easier to navigate than the Naim app too.

The Naim apps offers more information though. The Naim app does not recognize any of my Linn control points, so I haven't used it that way

i do like current Kazoo for Linn, and the current Naim app for Naim. They both work  well, with relatively few kinks.  There is room for improvement however, and I imagine it will come over time.

it would be nice if these applications recognized other manufacturers control points. It would make direct comparisons easier, and would likely improve the end product from both manufacturers.

That isn't what HH said. The books take you to the Now Playing screen, if something is playing, but they don't work if nothing is playing.

Please forgive my lack of clarity.

My sole problem here is that the "books" do not light up when they are supposed to.

I just went into my Naim app for the first time this morning. The books in the upper left were illuminated for the first time in several days. I could go backwards to look up worldwide radio stations. I chose one, listended to it and made it a "Favorite". I have not been able to do this for two days now, despite significant and changing use of my NDS during this time of both my iradio and upnp server.

it sure feels like there is something very fundamental to the use of this product that I am not understanding.

You can always go to the home screen and select iRadio, without needing to use the books icon. The app works fine for me and I suspect you are expecting the icon to work in situations where it is not intended. Try deleting the app and reinstalling it, just in case.

HH,

Thanks for that. I guess I should have though about reloading it. Perhaps that will help.

the one difference I forgot to mention between the Linn (Kazoo) and Naim apps is that the Linn app has a major advantage with a "search" offering.

It makes it much, much easier to find radio stations and different pnp music.

The Naim app very much needs to have this very valuable function.

Ok, I think I have this sorted out now.

If the books are not illuminated, I can just press the iradio button and look things up. Once I perform that activity, I can go back home, and the books are then illuminated.

I guess what I do not understand is why the "books" icon should ever be unavailable. Why wouldn't it just be available always?

Its like having a search button on you screen and not having it work for some obscure reason. It should just be available always.

As you have found, the books work when you have been to a screen, gone home and then want to get back again. When you first turn on, there is nowhere to go back to, so they don’t work.

Yes agreed a search function would be useful.    I surf iRadio a lot more than most (AFAICT)  I just touch the iRadio icon on the Home Screen, locations & go down the 'Locations' route.  In the larger countries & US states there is a filter function, but you need to be at that location for it to work.

Thanks for your feedback on the Linn apps,  I've used them on odd occasions with mates Linn systems but mostly to look into & search NAS streamed music.    I've tried whatever the basic one is callled on my Naim,  but its UPnP (NAS) functionality only & as such very limited & for sure no iRadio.

The magnifying glass search icon only searches Tidal, so you don't have to have the Tidal input open to use it.

There is no 'global' search option for UPnP (i.e. your own locally stored music) so to search this, you need to navigate to a list (such as Albums, Artists or Tracks) and search within that. Useful if you have forgotten your alphabet! To find the search box, swipe the screen down from the top of the list, and it will appear.
