Mu-so Active Gain Controls

Having owned an active Naim system in the past I have been able to set the gain controls on the snaxo to complement the environment the system was in stalled in. This once set up correctly would then never be touched again and meant that in the most challenging of rooms I was able to get the very best out of my system.  I have as so many on this forum purchased a mu-so for other rooms around the house but feel it would really benefit from having the same controls as it has the correct amount of amplifiers and a active crossover.

I think that naim have really missed a trick with this as they could keep the settings simple (say a gain control for the bass units and tweeters of no more that 3db each way and keep the mid-range units fixed)  This would enable us to set the units up correctly and get the very best out of our mu-so`s.

My complaint in that the bass could do with a small reduction as in the bedrooms the soft furnishing tend to leave the muso sounding slow and overpowering.

I understand that the guys in Currys maybe temped to wick the bass up to the max but for the rest of us it seems like there could be a little more to be had out on these fantastic little units.

I was wondering if anyone else feels the same and if anyone from Naim would like to comment.

The siting setup acts as a kind of bass contour control - Free space setting boosts the low end, whereas the close to wall setting cuts it.  experimenting further with positioning will allow you to fine tune. Also check whether the loudness is on.

I agree but positioning such a large lifestyle product is not so easy as one does not arrange kitchens, home study’s and bedrooms just to suet a audio source. The free space setting and loudness setting are fine for most but surely naim could add an active menu for advanced settings. The USP of the Mu-so was that it’s a true active system and yet the end user does not have the ability to adjust the system to suit the location of unit.

Linn have done wonders with there space optimisation software which would be far more complexed to add than a simple gain control for the poweramps. I’m sure Naim would have given it some though when they designed the mu-so but I would love to know why they didn’t go with it.

I can’t answer that, but perhaps if you ask someone at Naim you may get some further info.

I agree with Dingding and like my Mu-so Qb a lot, although it's a tad boomy and that's with all relevant settings appropriately set. I can't move it anywhere else in the bedroom so accept it as a characteristic as it's superior to anything of similar size and functionality that I've personally heard.

An off topic comment is that I think it's a shame there's no 'sleep' function. When I bought mine I was in a rush and quickly searched the word 'sleep' in the user manual without sufficient care, to find out later that it's a different kind of sleep being described! That was my fault but I'd still have made the purchase and think it's a great product.
