Used price for Nap135

Posted by: Paulairwolf on 24 January 2018

Hi all, have I gone crazy. I was contemplating upgrading my olive 250 to a nice pair of 135s. Started researching the price and find that 2.5 to 3k is currently being asked on a well known auction site for what is basically two of half a 250 with a separate ps, earthing improvements and a fan. Now don’t get me wrong, some may say they are worth it but really! I would value these at around 1.3k unserviced or 1.8k possibly 2k serviced max. Maybe they are now so rare that this is the deal. If so I’ll stick with the incredible 250 and the end of my upgrading dreams. Just wondered what others here think?

There’s currently a pair advertised for €1650! But in Italy.

I’m curious to know the basis you use assign your value, if, as you say, the normal going rate is different?

My expectation is that a pair of 135s would come in at less than price of a pair of 250s which currently go for around 1k serviced. Maybe I’m just naive but 1.5k unserviced and 2k serviced would be reasonable for 135s. It’s the market that drives the price and 135s are very desirable but not for me at current prices.

Paul

That pair on the auction site are taking the P! I would agree with your estimates, I have just traded my 135 in to my dealer, serviced in 2013.

Didn’t a pair of 135s cost twice the price of the 250 when they were both in production?

Are you comparing prices of pair of 135s against a single or pair of 250S? Fromyour original post I had assumed you meant a pair of 135s was £2.5-3k (though not what hifishark shows) whereas a single 250 was £1.3-2k, but now you’re saying that is for a pair of 250s.

Given my understanding that the 135 is a monoblock version of the 250, i.e. with a second case and power supply, and sounding better for it (based on both expectation for a monoblock and reputation of the 135). Without knowing their side-by-side new prices I would expect the price of a single 135 to be a lot more than half but not quite as much as the 250, for the same sort of age and condition. However, the market is also affected by supply and demand, and if the 135 is rarer than the 250 secondhand or more in demand than the 250 then that could easily explain a higher than expected price.

Hi Paul, you'll do better looking on non profit making sites for your amps. If you see a pair for £2.3k on this well known auction site the seller will be lucky to get £2k after fees and this is going to be factored in to the listing. They're lovely amps so keep looking and I'm sure you'll be lucky, cheers, Alan

Those 135 BIN prices are daft . I'd expect to pay £1750 to £1950 for a nice in service pair. Keep in touch with  established second hand audio dealers and also Naim dealers who may have  taken them as trade ins.

Thanks all. I am sane after all. The problem is that I’m just plain lazy and buying stuff online and it appearing at home as if by magic now seems to have had its day. I’m going old school and ringing round the dealers as advised.

My pair bought known as unserviced 10 yo spanked my just serviced 250 into briks. They needed servicing within a couple of years and returned sounding even better. They are a lot better than the spec would lead you to believe.
