Current streamer lineup.

Hi all

Currently being the new owner of a NDX which I love, should I be worried about a replacement coming?

When I ask this question I refer to all of the current streamer lineup.

Is the current lineup still likely to be supported for many years to come and carry on working? Or will updates and support stop and be focused on whatever new appears?

I know the rumour is the Bristol show may have something to show.

Obviously there are features on uniti streamers that are not on the NDX.

Colour display screen and over the web updates for example.

We can assume that the investors behind Naim want new products to generate new sales so just adding these additional features to the NDX and calling it NDX.2 would be a  logical step.

Naim have announced no new products since Oct 2016 and the new unity range so something must be in the pipeline.

Is there likely to be a replacement coming? Yes.  The New Uniti platform offers functions the Gen1 / Gen1.5 didn’t offer - colour screen and services such as Airplay (and Airplay 2), Chromecast and Roon.

Should you be “worried” by that? No.  Your NDX will sound the same as it always has and there is no reason to think Naim won’t continue to support the platform with its existing functionality - there just won’t be anything new coming.

Kind of repeating what I said above... but it won’t stop working, it will be supported, but apart from critical bug fixes I doubt any further updates will come (no new services / functionality).

I know the rumour is the Bristol show may have something to show.

Rumours are worth the paper they are written on...

I am aware of what the new Uniti range has and wasn't my concern, just that the existing line will still work for years to come.

Considering that the NDX already sits in your lounge, isn’t this a somewhat pointless worry? Unless of course you consider returning your beloved NDX...

The 'new' Uniti Range seems to have taken a long time to come to market, and is probably already dated in some ways.

To be honest I've often said I'd like a source only device with Uniti styling but in reality perhaps not - I prefer the classic minimalist styling and would be happy to lose the 'fancy' display as frankly it's ok but hardly essential especially when you have to use an app on a smart device to do most things - if the displayed allowed the remote to access all features then fine but it doesn't.

I'd also consider that any new device that will replace your NDX will likely be equivalent or higher price and given your previous comments that budget only allowed used NDX/SuperNait 2 then you'll probably smile if there is an announcement as your existing NDX should still retain good resale value.

If you want compatibility with the latest streaming services, a device like the NDX which was designed a decade ago is hardly likely to be able to keep up. When it was released, it was limited to local UPnP streaming and iRadio, and web streaming services were almost unheard of.

On the other hand, long term support for discontinued devices is something Naim have always offered, and I can't think of any company who can match this commitment.

Yes - you should be worried. As soon as the new streamers come out, the old ones will stop working immediately on the same day. Rivers will flow uphill, blue will turn into grey, winter will follow springtime and morning will end the day....

If you love the NDX so much then why are you worrying about a replacement. You have an excellent new system that has upgradeability via some separate psu's if you get the itch, enjoy it.

My original post was more regarding the fact that streaming technology and as this is open to ongoing change whereas a cd player or a record player will always be able to play a cd or a record.

I don't store any music and just stream straight from tidal flac.

CD players aren't immortal - when spares become unavailable, they are useless. Naim stockpile CD mechs to keep them serviceable for as long as possible, but this can't last forever. Then, music will not be released on CD forever, so the time will come when even a working player will be useless. The NDX, on the other hand, will work, as long as you can send it a WAV or FLAC stream. You might be a bit stuck if Tidal go bust, though!

I have thought about Tidal going bust. Is there a disadvantage in using a Chromcast dongle connected to the NDX to get the benefits of using other providers or will there be a reduction in sound quality? I know the new Unitis have it built in.

I haven't tried a Chromecast into my NDX, but they seemed to get a very mixed reaction here from different people who tried them. For £30, I guess there's little to lose by trying one with an optical cable.

I'd say worst case if Tidal goes belly up it'll be bought by the likes of Apple who were sniffing around before in which case it should hopefully remain available on existing platforms such as Naim, it wouldent make commercial sense for a new owner to alienate existing customers.........hopefully!!

Chromecast - OK, but not as good as a well configured UPnP setup...  But then again neither is Tidal!

I too am a big NDX fan so as long as the firmware is updated i am happy to be honest, I don't use Tidal or others only UPnP & I Radio - I use Asset 6

one issue will be playing of MQA files which NDX can't do at the moment, I have a couple of Albums on HSD - not sure like the slighly too cleanical sound

maybe NAIM will come up with a DR version for the older models ? for me I much prefer sound quality over the coloured screen
