Louder and better when warmed up - am I going crazy?

Posted by: dave-mac on 02 February 2018

Yesterday, I left my system (atom and focals) playing pink noise all day whilst I was at work. I came home and played an album at 30 volume and it sounded absolutely brilliant, and so loud that I had to turn it down a little, which is strange because 30 is my 'safe' volume so as to not annoy the neighbours.

This morning I switch on my system, play the same album at 30 and it sounds weak and a lot quieter. Does a non-warmed up system cause this much difference? My apartment is really cold, so I imagine the components may be affected in some way by that.

Leave it on 24/7 and come home to a warmer apartment. Should sound better also!

Just leaving the atom switched on you mean, disabling standby mode? I thought that was only applicable to valve gear? Is it possible the speaker cones get so cold overnight that they take a while to start performing 'properly'?

Dave-Mac, leave the Naim on 24/7 are the speakers fully run in ??

I thought 24/7 didn’t apply to the new Unitis?

I leave my Nova on standby, the Naim blurb says a small power supply keeps electronics primed ready to kick in when music is played. The larger power supply kicks in when you put the unit to use, ie play music.

The room temperature do affect driver spider and surround suspension.

I do leave the system on standby. The speakers have had ~100 hours now, as has the atom. The cables (chord epic) probably ~70 hours.

The systems been playing now for a couple of hours, I've just put that same album on and the volume, bass, and clarity have come back with a vengeance. It's definitely not in my head. I guess the combination of sub-zero temperatures and my apartments lousy heating affects my gear until it warms up.

You aren’t imagining it. Even if the electronics are left on it takes a while for the speakers to warm up, especially in a cold environment. Maybe it’s time for better heating.

Dave-Mac, I would imagine the temperature is part of the problem but some speakers take longer to run in varies from speaker to speaker but this can make an incredible differencce.

Someone should release a device which passes a constant barely audible low level signal to your speakers whilst it's not receiving a signal from your amp, to keep things ready to roll.
