Qacoustis soundbar remote

Posted by: Martin67 on 04 February 2018

I've recently purchased an M4 Qacoustics soundbar. A day or two later I pressed play on my CDX2 and nearly blew my speakers. The volume on the nac82 was nearly at max! I habitually leave the volume at  at minimum. The Qacoustics remote usess the same IR code as the Naim. Qacoustics though sympathetic have no answers. Well, power off the Naim! No as we well know. Cover the pre amp ir window. No, still gets through.

Anyone else had the same problem?

In a way... the Naim UnitiQute and NAC-N 272 use the same codes as my Arcam AVR.  Fortunately the digitally controlled Naims can be changed to use alternative IR code set.  I also had issues with Rotel and Marantz in combination in the past.

Have you tried covering it with a piece of card rather than just tape (if that’s what you’ve done)?  Stick it directly to the front panel even.

Thanks Eloise, appreciate your reply, it’s not unique, I wonder why manufacturers allow this. The Naim remote can even be used just outside the room if I wanted to and still changes volume etc. Whereas both my tv, the soundbar and dvd player need pointing at (as DT would say “bad”!) so when covering the small window of the pre with a fairly large card or paper, even if I could balance it to stay upright, the signal still  gets through, and its a faff.  Using the sound bar remote, the Naim volume moves unless the card is manually held very flush against window. Not having a digital pre amp I guess I’m unable to change the codes.

You have to laugh, it’s all a bit heath robinson, when you think of the money we spend on our kit. A bit like buying a Jag and finding someone opening your car doors with their Fiesta key fob.

Thanks again for suggestions.

When I had the Rotel and Marantz (as I recall) I used a piece of photographic mounting board, cut a piece out which I put a deep sore through and it makes kind of a flap... stick it (blutack) to the top of the Rotel so the other part can hang over the IR sensor or be lifted free.

Yes it’s Heath Robinson!

As I understand it, the remote controls tend to be commodity items - only a few manufacturers make the transmitters and receivers and no one controls what manufacturers use which code sets.

Of course on the plus side it means that everyone from Logitech to Sky can make remote controls which are universal or at least will inter-operate other devices.

Thanks again. I can see I’m going to have to get my craft knife and glue out!

It was a problem some years back with one of the SKY boxes - it used some codes that were used in the NAC52.  IIRC Pace or whoever made the box weren't very interested in remedying the situation, and many users with SKY boxes, so it was down to Naim to come up with a revised PIC fw to remedy the situation for affected SKY box users.

Did you ask the soundbar maker whether there's an alternative codeset available to avoid clashes? The only alternative is to change to a soundbar that doesn't use RC5 hifi amp volume codes.

Thanks Richard interesting history. As I said above the Naim remote/ pre amp  is really sensitive, it doesn't matter where you point it, even just outside the room, it works. The pre is late 90's vintage! Had the Naim been more like the remote for soundbar and tv (2018 vintage) and very insensitive, needing to be 'on target', I might have got away with it. I have contacted Qacoustics who though sympathetic, haven’t suggested anything other than turning the Naim equipment on and off each time, but as you know, we don’t do that! Unlikely to change soundbar as just purchased it based on sound quality and not having to need space for a sub. Sound is very good. However I will ask about the codeset. Wonder if Naim can change theirs! Ha.
