Help Sky Q Box / Superline Noise

Posted by: Quad 33 on 11 February 2018

Hi all, I had a Sky Q box system fitted yesterday. The main box and TV are in the same room as my system, a second mini box  was also linked to a TV in a bedroom with a booster box. When I went to play some vinyl this morning there was a load buzz almost a growl! coming through both speakers which stopped when I switched the TV and Q box off at the mains, only to return when the box was activated, I have tried disconnecting  the booster box which had no effect on the noise, my system is not on a dedicated ring main. I spoke to Sky technician this morning who listened to the offending noise over the phone but could offer me any explanation or a solution. Just to note I have had Sky boxes for about 10 years without a problem. I would be very grateful for any thoughts you may have before I revert back to what Sky euphemistically call there classic box system.

Regards Graham.

Graham - is the Q box connected to your hi-fi ? The other thing, these are using Powerline networking (Ethernet over the mains) which may be another issue - is there something in the settings to disable this, just to see if this is the problem.

Hi Graham

Maybe try a Tacima mains conditioning extension lead on the tv and q box? It may help reduce or stop any noise going back into the mains from those offending smps.

You can disable Ethernet over mains on the Q box in the hidden menus. Sky seems to set these up enabled as a matter of course.  I used my Sky boxes wired too and my Superline is quiet.

Thank you James  the Q box is not connected to the hi fi.

Ok, that's good - try disabling the Powerline function - see Ravenswood's post.

Graham, there is a very real possibility that your installers have connected the SkyQ to the Sky mini box by using the internal powerline adapters....if so  this is bad, very bad for any nearby quality audio components... you need to ensure the connection is via Ethernet or if necessary Wifi.

The installer menu and network setting will confirm and allow you to change. Do ensure there is an Ethernet cable (via a switch if necessary) between your SkyQ and Sky mini box.

Mine are all connected by Ethernet, but I had to explicitly ask the installer  to have this done when installed and I had previously prepared the Ethernet wiring...  there was no way I was going to have powerline adapters in my house...or load my Wifi with streaming HD video

Glad to hear it's sorted Graham. These damn Powerline devices are creeping in everywhere. That's one less operational anyway

I guess the problem is when your neighbors all start using them without even knowing it, and the source of the problem is out of your control. Very frustrating.
