Radio Paradise doped?

Posted by: T38.45 on 12 February 2018

This morning,I listened some music on radio paradise in cd quality (flac)...what shocked my was the punch of their recordings! I comared it directly with my ripped cd stuff and found out, that they must be on steroids ;-) Do they use "loudness" tricks or something like that? My ripped music sounds like and old, cold coffee.....

Agree - the 320K Radio Paradise stream always sound excellent on my Muso and SU2 - goes to show what can be achieved with a (relatively) limited bandwidth. I gather they are working on a full bandwidth (CD quality) FLAC stream - would be interesting to see if and when this is available? I see the RP website suggests February... but its not in Naim's Choice as yet?

How are you streaming RP? I've tried a few different ways with varying success, and it sounded pretty good, but I didn't think it was in the same league as the BBC Radio 3 FLAC trial last year, which really was excellent.

Thanks, I messed around for ages trying to make LMS run the RP app, couldn't get it to work and gave up in the end!

I contacted Bill in RP about this, long story short it's not coming anytime soon sadly although they are looking at solutions apparently. I send it Airplay from an ipad to my Atom

There is a chance that they will be able to support a Chromecast, which would be good for the new Naim streamers.

Hi,

I think that RP does equalizing. Many tracks offer a much better bass than the original CD recordings. Also very harsh recordings do sound less hard (like some David Bowie tracks). This is the reason why I‘d whish a treble and bass control for my next hifi.

Greetings

Gert

Both Linn Jazz and Classical are excellent 320kpb stations as good as Radio Paradise.

@Gert- that was my guess as well! They must do some tricks...

Yep Linn Jazz sounds excellent. Swiss station 1.fm Lounge stream is nice too @ 320K if you like chill-out sounds!

Yeah they definitely use a 'warming filter' of some kind, be it as an actual filter/EQ or by passive virtue of their equipment. Several times I've heard a track on RP and thought is sounded different, so I've then played the same track from my NAS. Each time the NAS version has been higher quality and more detailed, but less warm.

Frankly I'm not sure that I don't prefer the warmth. But the majority of the time I don't notice the difference all that much unless A/Bing between the two.

Flac sounds great out of a Fiio x7ii using coaxial into ND5xs even with cheep cable.

For just having the radio on, I think the Naim exclusive RP stream is really great, and well worth a contribution. It can be on for 6 hours or more a day.  If it was flac, all well and good, but for me it’s just too convenient as is on a preset to mess about connecting other bits.

100% Judge,  my feelings exactly.   I don't want the mess of added on bits & wire 'hook-ups's'.     I would love it if an 'inclusive' .flac stream can be worked out,  but if it can only play the excellent Naim exclusive AAC 44kHz 320kb/s that way,  thats just fine.

The Naim exclusive 320k is no different to the normal 320k though bar the artwork
