Alphabet order despite correct track numbers
Posted by: Rbt1 on 16 February 2018
I’ve been using Amvidia on my Mac to correct the tags on one of my downloaded .FLAC albums everything went fine until I opened the album in the Naim app the songs were in alphabetical order not track order. Has anyone had the same problem and how can I correct it thanks in advance
Are you browsing 'By Folder' by any chance - I've found that. I'm struggling to get to grips with sorting out metadata on my Qobuz downloaded audio to be honest - I really don't have the time/patience and just want albums to play in track order one after the other.
What UPnP software are you using?

Not sure if you mean me or RBT1.
Old WD running Twonky for the most part but playing with Asset on a Mac Mini.

I meant RBT1... apologies for the confusion
Sorry everyone the time got late could not respond last night. So I was in folder view with Twonky and a 3 year old WD Mycloud drive, with downloads from Qobuz and other sources. I agree with Alley cat I just want to listen to good music.

You'll find people really don't rate the WD with Twonky, and while I'd have to agree it's not great, I have other priorities before investing in a Synology or Qnap NAS which tend to be favoured.
When the WD works, it works fine, but I'd really not appreciated until recently how bad Qobuz metadata tagging is for many things, and hence 'folders' in the app can look a right mess with albums split up all over the place, and my solution was a direct browse by folder but this falls down as tracks are listed alphabetically - this may be due to lack of track numbers.
I've started testing Asset UPnP on a Mac Mini, and this is handy as if the same albums are split, it points to metadata 'issues' not ncessarily Twonky.
I will try in album view later today, as opposed to folder view, have to take care of somethings first. In the meantime I have put the track numbers in front of the song title in the file names and still does not work in folder view. Qnap and Synology works better? I thought a drive is drive, it’s just how you load it that makes the difference?
Putting track numbers in front of their names will not do anything. The sequence of an album is determined by the metadata of individual files (album, track name, their place in the album, etc, etc).
I’d double check the metadata first.
Whilst Twonky is not the best UPnP server software, even that can manage playing an album in correct sequence.
If you are using Folder view rather than Tag view, the tracks will show up in alphabetical order unless they are numbered. The numbers at the start of each track name make sure that they are displayed in the correct order. In Tag view, this shouldn't be a problem, although I've never used Twonky, so not sure if there are further issues there.
[@mention:36201736949470193] - correct me if I’m wrong, but if tracks have correct metadata, they should appear in a correct order even under a ‘folder view’ (that’s how I use my MinimServer occasionally).
I have the same setup
WD and twonky
How I do it is edit each track name with the band name in front
Then the naim app shows the band and song in order ..this works for me
Adam,
In folder view the tracks will appear in order of their filenames rather than track order i.e. the way in which they would normally be ordered within the folder on your computer. For this reason it's useful to append the track number starting with 01 (in case there are more than 9 tracks) to the beginning of the filename. There should be no need to add the track number to the track title itself.
Good point. Thanks for claryfing.

Thanks for clarifying that it's the filename that's important here rather than actual track name - this has been my assumption and why I've set up dBpoweramp to prepend the track number to the filename when I started using it for CD rips. Figuring out what Qobuz has done with many files is another proposition!
SJBABBEY that's actually how I have my album folders setup. If your system works in folder view and you are not using Twonky then that is where my problem lies. When I switch to album view or even by artist/album view the tracks are in the correct order I just controlled it. Tag view I don't have?
I find it hard to believe that Twonky has only folder view, not tag view! I know many don’t like it, but surely it’s not that limited. Maybe they just call it something else?
If they do call something else then I’m not sure what. Oh maybe the confusion is that I’m looking at the views that come with the naim app on my iPad. I beleave the only way to view with Twonky is with the computer
I spent many nights trying to get it right..and ended up with the solution I posted about as the only practical way to get it looking ok with the naim app
when did you post it? can you post a link or the date, then i will try and find your post.
thanks

RBT1,
there is no actual "Tag View" as such. The Artist/Album and Album views use the "album artist" and "album" tag metadata to sort/compile these views and enable you to drill down to the individual tracks in the correct track order.

Just further up this post...
ok sorry for the dumb question but what do you do when you have several albums by the same artist. and the track numbers are after the band name?
Use ‘artist’ view.
With a well working UPnP server software and files with proper meta-data, it really is not necessary to use ‘folder view’.
All that server softweare does is it presents the same database of files in different ways. This is what meta-data is used for.

Can we assume that you have organised your NAS drive's music files directory so that there is a folder for each artist and a subfolder for each artist's album containing the track files for that album plus a folder.jpg file for the album artwork? This should be the optimal way to organise your library and is the system I and others use and should enable you to use the folder/filename view should you so wish.
My other suggestion would be to access your Twonky Media server's GUI webpage and check the media server's configuration options. You can access the GUI webpage using your computer's web browser by typing in http://your mycloud's ip address:9000. From there you should be able to see the different browse views available to you and set these to your needs.
Unfortunately I am away from home at the moment so haven't got access to my own system or computer so cannot give you more detailed info.
Thank you all for the information I will try some of the things suggested. I will post my results so maybe it will help some of the other beginners like me. I will be trying things today and post this evening.
